- UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
HENRY R. GARDNER, OF BOSTON, MASSACHUSETTS.
ELECTRIC BOOT-BLACKING APPARATUS.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 366,660, dated July 19, 1887.
Application filed April 6,1886. Serial No. 197,051). (No model.)
To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, HENRY R. GARDNER, of Boston, Suffolk county, Massachusetts, have invented an Electrical Boot-Blacking Apparatus, of which the following is a specification.
My invention is aboot-blacking apparatus; and it consists ofa suitable foot-rest, an electromotor adapted to be supplied with motorcurrents from any suitable source, a flexible shaft connected with the motor and carrying a revolving brush, and provided with handles whereby the brush may be readily manipulated in its application to the boot or shoe upon the rest, all as set forth hereinafter, and as illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in which Figure 1 is a sectional view illustrating one form of my improved apparatus; Fig. 2, an outside view showing the apparatus slightly modified. Fig. 3 is a detached detail elevation of the motoncase, showing an auxiliary gear for imparting motion to the brush.
A represents a foot-rest, of any suitable construction, which may be securely clamped to the floor or any other fixed foundation, or may be attached to a portable platform or box,13, in the same manner as ordinary foot rests of bootblacking machines.
lVithin the case B, or within aseparate case, is inclosed an electromotor, O, of any suitable constructionas,' for instance, a Griscom Motor or a Hill Motorand to the end of a shaft, a, of said motor revolving at suitable speed, the arrnatureshaft or a shaft driven by gears from the armatureshaft, is connected a flexible shaft, D.
The flexible shaft may consist of wire, chain, jointed blocks inclosed within aflexible tube, or may be made in any other usual or suitable manner, and at the free end thereof is connected a polishing or blacking brush, E, and a suitable handle or handles, 1), so attached to the stationarypart of the shaft or brush frame as to permit the brush to be properly manipulated in applying it to the boots or shoes supported by the rest.
In the construction shown in Fig. 1 the handle bis tubular in form, is fastened tothetubular portion of the flexible shaft D, and aspindle, c, at the end of the revolving portion of the flexible shaft, passes through the handleb and carries the brush E. In Fig. 2 the brushframe I carries two geared shafts, of, the former being connected to the flexible shaft and the latter carrying the brush I and revolving in line with two handles, 1) b, as shown in Fig. 2.
In order to utilize the current supplied by means of large generators-such as are used in supplying cities or large buildings l connect the motor with the conductors, but interpose a resistance, B, so as to regulate the force of the current, and also useaswitel1,S, by means of which the device may be put into and out of operation without the necessity of stopping the generator.
In order to prevent the rapid revolution of the brush from throwing particles from the brush, I cover the latter, except at the point where it is to be applied to the shoe, with a suitable shield, 71, which is carried by lhebrush frame or handle.
Vithout limiting myself to the precise construetion and arrangement of parts shown, I
1. In a boot-blacking apparatus, a foot rest, a chamber to receive an eleetromotor, said motor, a rotating brush provided with a non rotating handle, and a flexible rotating shaft connecting said brush with said motor, substantially as described.
2. In a boot-blacking apparatus, an electromotor, a receiving-ease therefor, and a footrest secured to said case, in combination with a rotatable brush, a flexible rotating shaft to connect said brush with said motor, and means,- substantially as described, to open or close said motor to or against a current of electricity, as and for the purpose specified.
3. In a bootblaeking apparatus, a movable frame, a handle secured thereto, a rotatable shaft mounted therein, and a brush secured to said shaft, in combination with a case having a chamber to receive a motor, a foot-rest secured to said case, an electromotor within said case, a flexible rotatable shaft to connect said motor to said rotating brush, and electric conductors to and from said motor, substantially as described.
4. A movable frame, a handle therefor, and a rotating brush mounted therein, in co:'nbi nation with an electromotorheld within a fixed ease, having a foot-rest secured thereto, and a flexible rotating shaft connecting said motor to said brush to impart motion thereto, substantially as described.
5. A movable frame, handles secured thereto and a rotating brush mounted therein, in combination with a motor-receiving case, an electromotor therein, and a foot rest secured thereto, electric conductors to and from said motor, a resistance, and aswitch interposed in said conductors, and a flexible rotatable shaft to connect said motor to said brush to rotate the latter, substantially as described.
6. A movable frame having handles secured thereto, a rotating shaft mounted therein, a brush secured to said shaft, and a shieldpac with a motor-receiving case having an electromotor therein, and a foot-rest fixed thereto, a
flexible rotating shaft to connect said motor and brush, electrical connections, andaswiteh to open or close said motor to or against a current of electricity, as and for the purpose specified. I
In testimony whereof I have signed my name. to this specification in the presence of two subscribing witnesses.
HENRY R. GARDNER.
