Description
UNITED STATES ROBERT P. HENRY, OE AKRON, oigno.A
IMPROVED MACHINE FOR SCOURING MARBLE AND FREEST'ONE.Y
PATENT GEEICE.
Specification forinlng part of Letters Patent No, 36,650. dated October 14, 1862.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, ROBERT P. HENRY, of Akron, in the county of Summit and Slate of Ohio, have'invented certain new and useful Improvements in Machines for Scouring Marble or Freestone; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, ele-a1', and exact description of the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, which form a part of this specification, and in which Figure l represents a plan or top view of my improved machine. Fig. 2 represents a bottom view; and Fig. 3 represents a section on ,line A B, Figs. l and 2.
In the drawings, A and B represent the bottom and sides of a vessel for holding water, and which, for convenience, may be castin one piece. The bottom is provided with an eye, C, to which is fitted afunnel-shaped vessel, E F, which also may be cast with the bottom and sides of the main vessel, if preferred, although in practice it will probably be found more convenient to construct the part marked F separately.
The funnel-shaped vessel E F is divided or separated, as indicated in Fig. 3, so that the only communication between the top and bottomof said vessel is through the aperture a. It also has a cover, K.
XVithin the part marked E is suspended a convex distributer, G, by means of support ff, fastened to the top or interior of the former,
The pitman I is pivoted to an ear or projectiou, H, on the top of o ne side of the vessel A B, which may be made square oroblong instead of circular', as in this instance.
The bottom of the vessel is provided with curved grooves D, which extend from the eye G to near the periphery of the vessel. J is a simple fiange on the top of the water-vessel, and which serves to prevent the Water from being thrown out over the sides when the machine is in use.
The operation is as follows: The vessel A B is filled with water, -and that part of the funnel marked F with sand, when the machine is placed upon the marble or stone to be operated upon. The operator now takes hold of the pitman I and moves it longitudinally back and forth, thereby giving to the machine a reciprocating` and semi-rotary motion over the stone or marble, while during such operation the sand is gradually and steadily falling down the inclined sides of F, through the ap erture a, upon the distributor G, by which it is thrown or directed to the circumference of the eye C, where it mingles with the water which is allowed to flow into the eye C, through an aperture or hole in the part marked E, when both water and sand falling upon the stone or marble are worked off n nder the bottom of the machine by means of the grooves D, thus keeping` the entire rubbing or scouring part ofthe machine in good condition for action upon the material being polished.
Having described my improvements, what I claim as my invention,a1id desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
l. Constructingamachine forscouring marble and freestone with a vessel for holding water, in combination with a central vessel for holding` sand, substantially as and for the purposes described.
2. The use and employment of a funnelshaped vessel fitted to the eye of the machine, and opening into it, for holding dry sand and delivering it upon the stone, substantially as set forth.
8. The combination, with the central sandreceptacle, of the convex distributor C.
4. The combination ot' the curved grooves D with the central eye, G, substantially as set forth.
ROBT. P. HENRY.
Vitnesses:
HENRY IV. HOWE, JOHN W. BAKER.
