GUSTAF JOHNSON, OF DENVER, COLORADO.
POWER MECHANISM FOR BALlNG-PRESSES.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 366.397, dated July 12, 1887.
7 Application filed April 30, 1887. Serial No. 236,614. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, GUSIAF J oHNsoN, a citizen of the United States, residing at Denver, in the county of Arapahoe and State of Colorado, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Horse -Powers for Baling- Presses; and I do declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, referencebeing had to the accompanying drawings, and to the letters and figures of ref erence marked thereon, which form a part of this specification.
My invention relates to horse-powers for baling-presses.
The objects of my invention are to first provide a simple and inexpensive yet strong and durable horse-power for operating the plunger of a baling-press; second, to provide a horse-power for baling-presses which has a positive reciprocating action, by which the same is imparted to the plunger of the press, to which it may be attached. I accomplish these objects by the mechanism illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in which- Figure 1 is a side view of the machine. Fig. 2 is a plan view of the same. Fig. 3 is a top view of the sliding guide and the guide-rod and connections.
In the drawings, A represents the main frame of the machine. B is the main shaft, to which the sweep O and the main cam D are attached. The shaft B revolves in the top and bottom of the framein suitable bearings, and has a square projection formed upon its top B, over which a square socket in the end of the sweep is placed.
The cam D is formed as shown, and is provided with short vertical shafts D, fixed in its ends. On these shafts the frictionwheels E are placed and are held in position by the nuts F. At a short distance in front of the shaft B is the short upright shaft G. the lower end of which is fixed in the plate H, attached to the lower portion of the frame A. On the shaft G is placed the arm I, which is formed as shown, to the outer end of which the reeiproeating rod J is pivoted by the bolt 1, The
arm K is pivoted by the bolt K to the plate H. The rod L is pivoted to the outer end of the arm K by the bolt K, and the opposite end is pivoted to the arm I in the position shown in dotted double lines.
\Vhen the mechanism is in the position shown in the drawings, it will be noticed that the cam D in its revolution has carried the arm I to a point where the two will be disengaged, the arm K has been brought to a point where it will come in contact with the opposite end of the cam D, and as the cam D continues in its course the arm K will be brought to the position shown in dotted lines, which also indicate the positions of the rest of the moving parts. Thus it will be seen that by the revolution of the cam D thereeiprocating rod J will be forced back and forth by a positive action of the parts.
M M are axles for the wheels used in transferring the machine from place to place.
Fig. 3 is a continuation of the frame A and rod J. The guide-rod Nis held in position on the frame A by fastenings N, firmly attached to the frame. On the rod N is the sliding guide-bl0ck O, to which the outer end of the rod J is pivoted at O, and to which the outer end of the rod P (connected with the plunger of the press) is also pivoted at I Q is a casting on the frame to which braces T are attached.
R is a friction-wheel attached to the arm I in suitable bearings,by which the outer end of the arm is supported.
S is a track on which the wheel R is supported.
Having now fully described my invention, what I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
The described device, consisting of the shaft B, cam D, arm I, rods J and L, and arm K, in combination with the plate H and shafts G and K, frame A, and sweep C, substantially as set forth.
In testimony whereof I afrix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
GUS'IAF JOHNSON.
