STORM WINDOW.
No. 365,769. Patented July 5, 1887.

STORM- -WINDOW.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters-Patent No. 365,769, dated July 5, 1887.
Serial No.2'2f),83-2. (No model.)
To aZZ whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, ORRINGTON GOULD ANDREWS, a citizen of the United States, residing at Gardiner, in the county of Ken nebec and State of Maine, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Stormindows, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to an improvement in storm-windows; and it consists in the peculiar construction and combination of devices, that will be more fully set forth hereinafter, and particularly pointed out in the claims.
In the drawings, Figure l is a front elevation of a storm-window embodying my improvements. Fig. 2 is a vertical sectional view taken on the line 00 m of Fig. 1. Fig. 3 is a similar view, showing the wickets of the storm-window and the sashes in the windowframe in another position.
The object of my invention is to provide a storm-window with hinged wickets, and to combine the said wickets with the sashes of the window-framein such a manner that when the sashes are raised and lowered the wickets of the storm-window will be opened simultaneously thereby.
A represents a window-frame of the usual construction, and B and 0 represent the up per and lower window-sashes, which are secured in the window frame in the usual manner, and are adapted to slide vertically therein.
D represents a storm-window, comprising a rectangular frame, E, which is adapted to be bolted, screwed, or nailed to the outer side of the window-frame A, and is provided in its upper and lower sides with hinged wickets F and G, respectively. The said wickets are provided with panes of glass in the ordinary manner, and the window-sashes are also pro- Vld8d with panes of glass.
It will be observed by reference to the drawings that the window-sashes are movable in paths at right angles to those of the swinging hinged wickets. The upper sash, B, is connected to the upper wickets, F, by means of rods H. The said rods are pivoted at their inner ends to the said sash and have their outer ends hooked to eyes I on the inner side of the wickets F, near the free edges thereof. Similar rods, K, connect the lower sash, O, with the lower wickets, G.
The operation of myinvention is as follows:
XVhen the upper sash, B, is raised, the rods II are drawn upwardly thereby, so as to close the wickets F into the frame E, and when the lower sash, C, is lowered its rods K serve to close the lower wickets, G, and thus the sashes and also the wickets are closed, and thelatter are firmly locked to the sashes, so that they cannot be opened, except by first raising or lowering the sashes. When the upper sash is lowered, so as to open thewiudow-frame from the top to ventilate the room, the rods H, connected thereto, move the free sides of the upper wickets outwardly, and thereby open the same simultaneously with the upper sash, and
when the lower sashis raised the rods K, connected thereto, force the free sides of the lower wickets outwardly, and thereby open the said wickets at the same time that the lower sash is raised. By thus combining the wickets of the storm-window with the sashes of the window-frame the said wickets are adapted to.
Having thus described my invention, I
clai 111- 1. The combination of the storm-windowv having the hinged wickets F, the windowframe, to which the storm-window is secured,
the window-sashes movable in paths at right angles to those of the swinging hinged wickets, and the rods having their outer ends pivotally connected to the hinged wickets and their inner ends pivotally connected to the windowsashes, for the purpose set forth, substantially as described.
2. The combination of the storm-window having the hinged wickets F, the windowframe, to which the'storm-window is secured, the window-sashes movable in paths at right angles to those of the swinging hinged wickets, and the rods connecting the sashes to the wickets, for the purpose set forth, substantially as described.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing as my own I have hereto affixed my signature in presence of two witnesses.
ORRINGTON GOULD ANDREWS.
Witnesses:
B. D. WHITNEY, HENRY FARRINGTON.
