JOB BROWN, OF LAWN RIDGE, ILLINOIS.
IMPROVEMENT IN DEVICES FOR PREVENTING SWINE FROM ROOTING.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 36,1150, dated September I6, 1862.

rlhis invention is designed as an improvementon the ordinary wire or ring which isinserted into the noses or snouts of swine to prevent them from rooting. In order to secure this ring or wire a hole is made through the nose or snout and the wire passed through it and twisted together at its ends.
The object of my invention is to obviate the puncturing or boring of the nose or snout and to obtain a device which may be securely attached to the same and answer equally as well as the ring hitherto used.
To this end the invention consists in the employment or use of a pendant formed of a piece of wire of suitable size bent in the form of a spiral spring and having its ends curved so as to meet and form a clasp to grasp the partition within the nose or snout, as hereinafter set forth.
To enable those skilled in the art to fully understand and construct my invention, will proceed to describe it.
A represents the pendant, which is constructed of apiece of wire of suitable dimensions, the central part of which is bent or Wound in the form of aspiral spring,as shown at a, and having its outer parts, b b, bent so as to form a bow or clasp, the ends of which will, when not applied to the nose or snout of the swine, be kept in contact by the spring portion a.
The outer parts, b b, of the pendant are of suflicient length to admit of the spring portion a extending down in front of the lower part of the nose or snoutwhile the ends of the parts b b grasp or clamp the partition within the nose, as shown clearly in Fig. 1.
The device thus constructed and applied cannot become casually detached from the nose or snout, and it may be applied with the greatest facility, all that is required being merely to spread apart the ends of the parts b b and insert one in each nostril and then release said parts, which will then, under the action of spring a, grasp firmly the partition Within the nose.
Thus I dispense with the puncturing or boring ofthe nose or snout, which is rather a troublesome operation and consumes considerable time. The device, it will be seen, may be detached. from the nose or snout at any time with equally as great facility as it can be applied. v
Iron or brass wiremay be used. The latter material, of course, is not liable to rust, and is vpreferable on that account; but it is more expensive than the iron, and the latter will generally last one season.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
A spring-pendant constructed and applied to the nose or snout of swine, substantially as and .for the purpose herein set forth.
