J. C. HAGGBTT.
STEAM TRAP.
No. 363,631. Patented May 24, 1887.
Illlllllllllnlll l II Wil UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
JOTHAM C. HAGGETT, OF DUNKIRK, NE\V YORK.
STEAM-TRAP.
SPECIFICATION forming part ot Letters Patent No. 363,631, dated May 24, 1887.
Application filed January 5, 1887. Serial No. 533,457. (No model.)
To aZZ whom, it may concern.-
Be it known that I JOTHAM C. HAGGETT, a citizen of the United States, residing at Dunkirk, in the county of Chautauqua, State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Steam-Traps,of which the following is aspecification, reference being had therein to the accompanying drawings.
My invention relates to certain improvements in steam-traps, the object of which is to provide a cheap, simple, and durable article. This obj cet is attained by the means illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in which- Figure l represents a view in elevation, part being in section; and Fig. 2, a perspective view of the trap-supporting frame.
In the drawings, the letter A represents a frame constructed of suitable material and cast or made in one piece, said frame having a chamber, B, at its inlet and a valve-cham ber, C, at its outlet. Into chamber B extends the steampipe D; also, an expanding tube or pipe is connected therewith,eXtendin g into the valve-chamber C. Screwed into the valvechamber C, at the upper end ofthe frame A, is an adjustable valve, F, having an elastic packing on its face; and connected with this same chamberisan exit-port,E. The chamber B is provided with a discharge-valve, G, for the purpose hereinafter described.
rlhe tube D passes through a water-tight opening in the chamber C, which7 however, is not suiiiciently t-ight to prevent the proper expansion and contraction of the said tube,so as to prevent leakage.
By the peculiar construction of my improved trap, aside from the cheapness of the device, a further advantage is attained, as the frame can be cast in one piece, which has been impossible heretofore.
A further advantage results from the adjustable removable valve, which permits the device to be cleaned and adjusted by removing the valve alone without disturbing the other parts.
It is evident from the drawings that the sediment that accumulates in this class of traps is collected in the reservoir B without coming in Contact with the valveseat; and again, should any hard substance, such as scales, Src., from iron pipes, become embedded on the valve-seat, or the valve-seat become foul from any cause, the valve can be easilyremoved, cleaned,or faced oif withoutdisturbing the other parts thereof.
It also will be seen that the sediment lies dormant in chamber B, being deposited there before reaching or coming in contact with the Valve. There being no current at that point, the sediment will remain therein until blown off by opening the discharge-valve.
Again, I claim a great advantage in constructing the trap-frame all in one piece with the chambers located at each end, assuring the full benefit of all expansion and contraction, obviating any loss, as in other inventions where the frame is constructed in many pieces and having many joints.
The valve F is screw-threaded, as seen, for adjustment. i
Having thus described my invention, what I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent,
1. A steam trap having an expansiontube and an adjustable valve screwed into an open frame, having a valve-chamber and a sediment-chamber provided with an exit-pipe and a dischargeyalve, respectively, as described.
2. A steam-trap consisting of an open frame having an expansion-tube and an adjustable valve, said valve having an elastic seat, and said frame having a sediment-chamber into which the steam passes before reaching the expansion-tube, as set forth.
3. A steam-trap having an expanding tube, an adjustable valve, and an open frame supporting said parts,v said frame being constructed in one piece, as set forth.
In testimony whereof I affix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
J OTHAM C. IIAGGETT.
