GRATE.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 363,344, dated May 17, 1887.
Application filed February 20, 1886. Serial No. 192,697. (No model.) I
Improvements in Grates; and I do declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such'as will enable others skilled in the art to which it apper t'ains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to letters or figures of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification.
Figure l of the drawings is a representation of this invention, and is a bottom view. Fig. 2 is a vertical section taken where the broken linex as is marked on Fig. 1. Fig. 3 is a section taken at y y. Fig. 4 is a section taken at z .2.
This invention relates to grates for stoves and the like; and it consists in the construction and novel combination of parts, as will be hereinafter set forth, and pointed out in the claim.
Referring by letter to the accompanying drawings, A designates the grate, which iscomposed of the horizontal parallel bars B and G, which are connected by the integral transverse bars D D, which are heavier at their middle portions, E E, than throughout their other portions, and from these heavier portions integral bearing-shafts F F extend horizontally, and are designed to support the grate in place when in use.
The projecting ends of the'horizontal transverse grate-bars are tapering, as shown, and
provided in their under faces or edges with transverse grooves H, having inclined faces, the object being to permit a reduction of the grate-bars, when neeessar y, at these points, by simply breaking off the ends of the grate-bars at the desired point. When the grate-bars are provided with these transverse grooves, the bars can be broken at the desired point, while where the ordinary notches are employed the bar is likely tobe broken at any other than the desired point.
In this improved construction the reduction is certain, while in the old construction the break is likely to occur at another than the desired point. I am aware that it is not new to provide a fire-back with grooves whereby the same may be broken or reduced at the desired point, and that stove-dampers have also been provided with similar devices, and therefore do not claim such, broadly.
Having described this invention, what I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent,
As an improved article of manufacture, a fire grate having thelongitudinal bars tapered at their ends, provided with the transverse grooves in their lower edges, and connected by transverse bars intermediate of their ends, substantially as specified.
In testimony whereof I affix my signatu re in presence of two witnesses.
ALBERT S. NEWVBY.
