SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 363,316, dated May 17, 1887.
Application filed November 30, 1886. Serial No. 220,303. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern.:
Be it known that I, GEORGE J. CLINE, a citizen ofthe United St-ates, and a resident of Goshen, in the county of Elkhart and State of Indiana, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in FenceeMachines; and I do declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, refcr ence being had to the accompanying drawings, and to letters or figures of reference marked y thereon ,which form a part of this specification.

My invention relates to machines for making picket felices; and it consists in the construction and novel combination of parts, as hereinafter described and claimed.
Referring by letter to the accompanying drawings, A designates the bed-piece or sill of the twister-frame. The vertical timbers B C are secured to the bed-piece by nailing them to the edges of said bed-piece, or by mortising the vertical timbers into the bed-piece, or in any other suitable manner that will provide for the requisite strength of the structure.
Cross-pieces D E, F G, H I, and J K, ar ranged in pairs, are secured to the opposite edges of the vertical timbers B C, and the several pairs of cross-pieces aforesaid are provided With aligned openings L, which form the seats or bearings for the tubular journals M of the several twisters N O P Q. The tubular journals M are preferably made of gaspipe, and are provided each with two diametrically-disposed interior lugs, R and S, through which the wires to be twisted pass. Each of the tubular journals M is provided with a sprocket-gear, T, which is rigidly secured to its journal M, so as to turn the journal when the sprocket-gear is turned. An endless sprocketchain, U, runs over the upper and lower sprocket-gears T and engages the intermediate sprocket-gears at the same time. A larger sprocket-gear, V, journaled in bearingsin the ends of the arms WV W, also engages the endless sprocket-chain at one side. A
lever, X, is lulcrumed on the journal of the sprocketgear V, and is provided with aspringpressed pawl, Y, which normally engages the sprocket-gear V, so that said sprockctgear may by turned to move the endless sprocketi chain, which in turn rotates the twister and twists the wires.
It will be seen that the lower end of the spring-pressed pawl is turned in such a manner that the same will engage the teeth of the sprocket-\vheel V and turn the same when the said lever is turned in one direction; but when the said lever is moved in the opposite direction the pawl will ride over the teeth of the said wheel and allowthe operati-ng parts of the machine to remain idle.

The combination, with the frame provided with the twisters, the endless sprocket-chain, thelarger sprocket-wheel, its lever and pawl, of the'reel-post provided with independent pivoted reel-frames carrying double reels, substantially as specified.
