VALTER RATHBONE BACON, OF LONDON, ENGLAND.
APPARATUS FOR NUMBERING TICKETS.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 363,193, dated May 17` 1857- Application filed April 19, 1886.
To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that l, VALTER RATHBONE BA- 00N, a citizen of the United States of America, and a resident of London, England, have invented new and useful Improvements in Apparatus for Consecutive] y Numbering Tickets, Labels, and the Like, of which the following is a specification, reference being had to the accompanying drawings.
My invention relates to apparatus for consecutively numbering tickets, labels, and the like, which apparatus is chielly designed to be used in machines for printing rail-way and other tickets.
My said invention relates more particularlyT to apparatus of that kind or class wherein two or more sets of numerical disks or rings are mounted uponawheel or cylinder with the axis of each set parallel to that of the said w heel or cylinder'.
The invention consists in the combination of deviceshereinafterdescribed and claimed, reference being made to the accompanying drawings, in which-- Figure 1 is a front elevation of the apparatus. Fig. 2 is a section on the line w x, Fig. l. Fig. 3 is a rear elevation of the aforesaid wheel or cylinder detached. Fig. 4 is a section on` the line a" x', Fig. 2, showing an eccentric hereinafter described; and Fig. 5, a detail sectional View.
Like letters indicate corresponding parts throughout the drawings.
a is a shaft having a journal, a', whereby it is supported in a bearing in the printing or other machine in which it is used.
b is the wheel or cylinder which carries the numerical disks or rings, and which is fixed upon the shaft a.
c c c2, 85e., are the numerical disks or rings. The disks or rings c c c2, Ste., are formed or fixed on the sleeves or spindles d d d2, &c., which are fitted to rotate one within another, as shown, the central spindle, if desired, being solid. The exterior sleeve or spindle of each set is fitted to rotate in a bearing in the wheel or cylinder b. On the ends of the said sleeves or spindles opposite the ends which carry the disks or rings I form or fix ratchet-wheels e e e, &c.,whereby the said disksor rings are intermittently rot-ated by the means hereinafter described.
Serial No. 199,438. (No model.)
It will be seen that the numerical disks or 4rings are in close contact with each other, so that ink or other matter is not liable to enter between them. Moreover, should ink or other matter happen to enter between the said disks, o
to a lever or pawl-carrier, g, which is fitted with a capability of rotation on the bosses or hubs of the outer ratchet-wheels. The pawls f are acted upon by a spring, f,whereby they are caused to engage with the ratchet-wheels. There are as many pawls as there are ratchetwheels in the said set, and these pawls are made of different length, so that they will operate the ratchet-wheels in the same manner as in the'so-called deep-tooth consecutivenumbering apparatus. For each ratchet-wheel there is provided a pawl, such as at h, Fig. 3, said pawl being pivoted to the wheel or cylinder b and acted on by a spring, such as z'.
The pawl-carriers g are provided with pins or studs, upon which are Iitted anti-friction rollers g', projecting from the Y pawl carriers into slots k in a ring'or annular piece, lr. This annular piece is iitted to rotate upon an eccentric, Z, which is secured to the frame of the printing or other machine. The ring or annular piece 7.a rotates with the wheel or cylinder b, and during such rotation is moved to and fro by the said eccentric, thereby operating the pawl-carriers g in such a manner that the ratchet-wheel of the units-disk of cach set will, in every revolution of the wheel or cylinder b, be turned through a distance equal to the length of one ot' its teeth.
The apparatus when constructed with ten sets of numerical disks, as shown in Fig. 1, is adapted for printing single impressions-that is to say, one impression of each number. W'hen the apparatus is required to print in duplicate-that is to say, to print two impressions in successionlof each numberthe unitsdisks of all the sets have each ten figures, arranged as follows-that is to say, thennitsdisks of the iirst and second sets are each provided with the iigures l and G, placed alter- IOO ternately around the periphery thereof; those of the third and fourth sets with the figures 2 and 7 alternately; those of the fifth and sixth set with the iigures 3 and 8 alternately; those of the seventh and eighth sets with thengures 4 and 9 alternately, and those of the ninth and tenth sets with the figures 5 andO alternately. The other disks of each set are provided with figures in the ordinary manner.
The apparatus may, if desired, be adapted for triplicate numbering by arranging three, six, or nine sets of disks upon the wheel or cylinder b and providing the uniis-disks with figures suitably arranged for the purpose.
What I claini is 1. The coinbination, with one or more sets of numerical disks or rings carried by a Wheel or cylinder and pawls for operatingsaid disks or said wheel or cylinder said ring or annular piece will impart oscillating motion to said pawls, substantially as and for the purposes set forth.
2. The combination, with the numerical disks or rings c c', 85e., the spindles d d', Sto., and the ratchet-wheels ee', &c., all carried by the Wheel or cylinder b, of the pawls f, the paWl-carriers g, having rollers -or studs, the rotating ring or annular piece le, provided with slots h', to engage with the rollers or studs on said pawl-carriers7 and the stationary eccentric l, on which the ring or annular piece rotates, all substantially as and f or the purposes set forth.
In testimony whereof I have hereunto signed my name in the presence of two subscribing witnesses.
