T. H. DUZAN.
DUST GUARD FOR OAR WINDOWS.
Patented May 17, 1887.
N4 Fzrzns. Pjmio-Likhogmpher, wa-nin mn'. ac.
NITED THOMAS H. DUZAN, or PALESTINE, TEXAS.
oust-GUARD FOR CARHWINDOWS'.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No, 363,125, dated May 17, 1887.
(No model.)
To aZZ whom, it may concern.- 7
Be it known that I, THOMAS H. DUZAN, a citizen of the United States, residing at Palestine, in the county of Anderson and State of Texas, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Dust-Guards for Carindows; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
My invention relates to that class of devices which are designed to prevent the entranceof cinders or sparks into the windows of railwaycars; and the object of my invention is to produce an attachment which shall be of simple form or construction, and which maybe readily attached to or removed from the frame of a car-window, and which shall serve to collect the cinders, or sparks, or dust and discharge them underneath the ear-window during the progress of the train.
To the above purposes my invention consists in the peculiar and novel form and location of the guard or einder-arrester, as hereinafter described and claimed.
In order that my invention may be fully understood, I will proceed to describe it with refer ence to the accompanying drawings,in which Figure 1 is a side elevation of a sleepingcar with my improvements attached thereto. Fig. 2 is a vertical section of one of the can windows, showing the escutchcon for receiving the guard. Fig. 3 is a perspective view of the guard.
In the said drawings, A designates one of the windows of a passenger-car, which is provided with two recesses or grooves, a a, to receive two frames or sashes, B B, such double sashes being ordinarily used for sleeping-ears, to which my invention is particularly intended to be applied.
In the outer groove or recess, a, is placed an escutcheou, I), having a hole, b, from which a slot, 4)", extends downwardly, as shown.
Gdesignates the guard, which is of concavoconvex form, having its upper end closed by a transverse portion, 0, and having its lower end formed with an inclined portion, a, leading to and terminating in an opening, 0 as shown. The edge 0 of the guard is provided with a strip, d, of woodor other suitable material, and upon the outer side of this strip is placed a stud, d which is designed to be in-. sorted into the escutcheon b and brought downward into the slot b for the purpose of holding the guard with its concave side in the direction in which the trainor car ordinarily moves. Holes 6 are formed in the oblique or inclined portion 0 of the guard, to receive yarn or any other suitable material, which sh all effectively close any opening between the sillf of the car-window and the edge ofthe inclined portion a of the guard, so that the sill shall not be injured, it being understood that the pitch of the inclined portion 0 corresponds with the pitch of the sillf. By virtue of this arrangement, the smoke, dust, or cindors are drawn into the guard and are discharged from its lower end through the opening 0 as shown in the drawings. The window-frame may be lowered upon the upper end of the guard, so as to permit free ventilation of the car.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by-Lctters Patent, is-
1. As an improved article of manufacture, a dustguard for car-windows, &c., the body of which is of eoncavo-conveX form, closed at its upper end by a transverse plate and provided at its lower end with a contracted opely ing for the discharge of cinders, dust, &e., said body portion being provided with means, substantially as described, for effecting its attachment to a window-frame, for the purpose specified.
2. An improved dustguard for rail way-cars, consisting of a metallic frame of concavoconvex form, provided with the strip (1, having the stud, substantially as described. v
3. The combination, with'the window-frame of a car provided with an escutcheon, b, of a guard of eoncavo-convex form having its lower end inclined and made with an opening, a, and its upper end closed by a transverse portion, 0, a series of holes, 0, designed to receive a cushioning material, substantially as set forth.
In testimony whereof I affix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
THOMAS H. DUZAN. W'itnesses:
E. H. NALL, O. B. SAwYERs.
