BENJAMIN F. "WILSON, OF PITTSBURG, PENNSYLVANIA.
HOISTlNGw-UCKET.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 363,105. dated May 17, 1887.
Application filed October 18, 1886. Serial No. 216,599. (No model.)
To aZZ whom it may concern.-
Beit known that I, BnNJAMiN F. WILsoN, a citizen of the United States, residing at Pitts` burg, in the county of Allegheny and State of Pennsylvania, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Hoisting-Buckets; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it pertains to make and use the salne, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, which form a part of this speci tication.
My invention relates to an improvement in hoisting-buckets for loading, unloading, and transporting coal.
'Ihe object is to provide a means whereby coal or other substance Vmay be loaded or unloaded from boats, cars, dto., without breakage. This I accomplish with two open-ended boxes hinged together and provided with a means for attachment to a hoisting device, to` gether with certain other details of construe tion and combination ofparts, as will be fully described hereinafter.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure l is a side elevation of an improved hoisting-box constructed in accordance with my invention. Fig. 2 is a sectional end elevation of the same, taken on the line a" x of Fig. 1, looking toward the left. Fig. 8 is a side elevation of my improved box, showing the position of thc same while in the act of discharging its con-- tents.
To put my invention into practice, I provide two strong wooden boxes, a and I), each having an open topy and end, and securely braced with three metallic bands, two of which, c, are riveted or bolted to the ends and bottom, and the other, LZ, placed at right angles, bracing the sides and bottom of the box. rlhese boxes a and b, Isecure together by means of a strong hinge7 e, placed on each of thc upper corners of the open ends of the boxes. At about one-third ot' the distance between the hinges e and outer edges of the boxes c and b are four circular openings, f, in which short chains g, provided with hooks h, are con- These chains g, I secure at their other ends to a ring, t', which I connect to a hoisting device capable of elevating the boxes a and b to any required height. At
the two ends of the boxes a and b, I form two circular openings, 7c, and connect the same by chains Z to the hoisting device, in the same manner as before described. These boxes a and Z, constructed as described, are lled with coal or other substance, and packed in cars or boats for transportation and unloaded by a crane or hoisting device.
The operation of unloading is as follows: The four short chains g, intended for lifting the boxes, are attached to a hoisting device such as is in common use at all points of delivery, and by means of the hooks Zi are secured in the openings f nearest the hinges e, and being to one side of the center of each ot' the boxes c and b will not allow the same to open or spread. The end chains, Z, are also attached to the boxes in the same manner, but lead to an independent drum on the hoisting apparatus. rIhe boxes and contents are now elevated and moved to the desired point of unloading and lowered to the door or ground. The ends of the boxes av and b are now elevated by means ot' the chains Z, which operation gently discharges the contents toward each other, substantially lifting the boxes from beneath their burden. The chains g and Z are now detached from their boxes and secured to another. This operation is continued uut-il the vehicle is unloaded.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, 1s
The improved hoisting apparatus herein described, comprising, essentially, thev two rectangular parts hinged together at their meeting ends at their tops, the metallic straps c, having their vertical branches terminating in eycs,as shown, the straps (Z, placed at right angles to the straps c, the hinges at the upper open ends of the said parts having the eyesf at their outer ends, the set of chains g g, counected together at their upper ends and secured to the eyes f at their lower ends, and the set of chains Z Z, connected at their upper ends and secured to the eyes of the straps c o at their lower ends, substantially as specified;
BENJAMIN F. WILSON.
