H. P. WATSON.
COVERING FOR STEAM PIPES.
No. 363,028. Patented May 17, 1887.

UNITED TATES HARRY F. WATSON, OF ERIE, PENNSYLVANIA.
COVERING FOR STEAM-PIPES.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 363,028, dated May 17, 1887.
Application filed August 24, 1885. Serial No. 175,201.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, HARRY F. WATsoN, of Erie, county of Erie, and State of Pennsylvania, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Coverings for SteanrPipes, Boilers, &c., of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description.
The aim of my invention is to provide a covering which shall be fireproof, water-proof, and a non-conductor of heat; and to this end it consists, essentially, in a covering composed of an inner layer of fire-proof deafening-felt, a second layer of either plain or corrugated deafening-felt, and an external layer or covering of waterproof or sized paper.
My compound covering may be made in the form of sheets, in tubular, or in such other form as circumstances may demand.
In the accompanying drawing I have represented in cross-section a steam-pipe having my improved covering or jacketing material applied thereto.
A represents the inner layer, composed of what is known in the trade as fire-proof deafening-felt, consisting of paper or woolen fiber treated with fire-proof compound or asbestus, suitably prepared in sheet form. This material is at present well known to all persons skilled in the art, and as it forms no part of my invention need not be more fully explained.
Brepresents the second orintermediatelayer, consisting of what is generally known in the art as dcafening-felt--a thick felt composed of suitable fiber, having wool, asbestus, or similar material incorporated therein. I propose to make use of this material either in the form of plain flat sheets or in sheets which have (No model.)
been corrugated, the latter being preferred for the reason that it produces internal spaces between the layers.
0 represents the external layer, consisting of paper treated with oils, resin, resinous compounds, or other material by which it is rendered water-repellent.
The several layers may be brought together and confined one upon another at the time of their application to the pipe or other object to be covered; or they may be glued, cemented, or otherwise united in one inseparable body previous to their application. I propose to thus unite the several layers at the time of their manufacture, in order to produce the complete covering in marketable form.
I am aware that fire-proof and waterproof papers and felts have been constructed in various Ways, and that boiler and pipe coverings have been composed of two, three, and more layers of different materials; but I believe myself to be the first to provide a covering consisting of the specific materials combined in the specific relations herein described and claimed.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim is The herein-described boiler-covering, consisting of the inner layer of fireproof felt, the outer layer of water-proof paper, and the intermediate layer of corrugated water-proof paper.
HARRY F. \VATSON.
