I JV V'E'JV' TOR .dttorney NITE STATES ATENT JOSEPH B. MGOUNE, OF IVOROESTER, ASSIGNOR TO THE SPRINGFIELD BICYCLE MANUFACTURING COMPANY, OF BOSTON, MASS.
HANDLE-BAR FASTENING FOR BICYCLES.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 362,763, dated May 10, 1887.
Application filed November 26, 1886. Serial No. 2 10318. (No model.)
To aZZ whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, Josnrn B. llIUCUNE, a citizen of the United States, residing at \Vorcester, county of \Vorcester, State of Mas sachusetts, have invented new and useful Improvements in Handle-Bar Fastenings for Bicycles, of which the following isa specification.
This invention relates to certain new and useful improvements in fastenings for the handle-bars of bicycles; and it consists substantially in the same as constructed, and in such other features of improvement as will hereinafter be more particularly described, and pointed out in the claims.
The object of the invention is to provide a socket or fastening for the handlebar of bicycles, so constituted as that the bar shall be prevented from turning therein, and also from being displaced lengthwise or longitudinally.
Further, the invention has for its object to provide a socket of this character possessing the further characteristic of enabling the handle-bar to be readily inserted for-use and again removed when occasion shall require it.
Finally, the invention has for its object to provide a device of the character described which, in that class of bicycles wherein the handle-bar is separable from the steering fork or head, shall enable the use of a bar of a single or one continuous piece, all as will more fully appear from the description hereinafter following, when taken in connect-ion with the accompanying drawings, wherein Figure 1 represents a side view of handlebar fastening embodying the features of my invention. Fig. 2 represents a top or plan view thereof; and Fig. 3 is a sectional view of Fig. 2, taken on the line x m.
Referring to the several parts by the letters marked thereon, A represents as a whole a cast-metal socket formed with a circular bore or opening, a, by which the same is attached to or secured around the head of the steering fork or bar B of a bicycle, and also formed with a similar opening, I), at right angles to the first, for the reception of the handle-bar 0. That part of the socket A forming the walls of the opening or cavity 2) is divided or separated on the lines 0 and d, forming thereby a detachable section, D, by the removal of which the handlebar C may be readily inserted and again removed.
Parallel to the opening a and transverse to b, the socket A, together with the removable section D, is-screwtappcd, as shown at c e, for the reception of screws f f, as shown, and in certain points of the handlebar coinciding with said screws are formed notches or indentations g 9, into which a portion of the screws or bolts are received, and it will thus be seen that the handle-bar is prevented from rotating, and also from moving lengthwise in its fastening.
The opening a, by which the socket is fitted to the steering bar or fork, may be screwtapped, if desired, to fit a corresponding thread on the head of the bar, or the said socket may be secured thereto in any other preferred manner, this particular feature form ing only a minor detail of the invention.
From the foregoing it is evident that the insertion and removal of the handle-bar from its fastening can be very easily effected, and that when the same is in place the force exerted upon it for the purpose of guiding will be at once communicated to the stccringbar through the medium of the socket without lia bility of accident resultant to slipping thereof. It will further be seen that by my invention various forms of handlebars can be employed, and that they may be made of a single or continuous piece; also, that but little expense is involved in the manufacture as compared with former improvements in this class of inventions.
I am aware that it is not new, broadly, to provide a handle-bar fastening by which bars of different shapes and of a single piece may be readily inserted into place and again re moved; and I am further aware that in some instances the contrivances resorted to for this purpose have been constructed of a socket for attachment to the fork, provided with a removable section or plug for holding the bar in place; but, so far as I am aware, the particular construction of device herein claimed has never heretofore been devised.
Having thus described my invcntiomwhat I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
1. Ahandle-barfastening for bicycles, formed openings at b, the said detachable section havfor attachment to a steering bar or fork and ing securing-screws, a portion of Whose body provided with an opening for the reception of extends into the opening I), substantially as and 15 the bar, closed by a detachable section, in comfor the purpose described. bination with a handle-bar having notches in In testimony whereof Ihave hereunto set my its body, and screws for securing the movable hand in the presence of two subscribing wit section, which also enter the notches of the nesses. bar, substantially as and for the purpose described.
10 2. A fastening for the hand1e-bars of bi- Witnesses:
cycles, consisting of the socket A, provided A. G. WVOODWORTH, with the detachable section D, and having E. J. M. HALE.
