SfEillZlrXflAllQhl forming part of Letters Patent No, 363,602, dated May 10, 1887.
Application filed January 24, 185.7.
' To aZZ 107L077), it nmy concern.-
Be it known that 1. JAMES E. Emacs, of Brooklyn, in the county of Kings and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful lmpro'reinentsin Shutters for Skylights, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to an improved shutter for'shyiights, by which the space below the skylight can be securely shut-off, the shutter forming an effective protection against the spread of lire, as well as a.- safeguard against on glars; and the invention consists ofs slaylightcasing having a horizontal supportingiiange, a shnttcr formed of a series of slats hanged zit one edge and adapted. to be folded up at one side of the casing, one cndslst being 11' to ihe while the opposite ilaitlgo. re opening or closing of the shutter- Slide aceoinplishei'l by wire cords or chains, which from it suitable roller over guideto the ontcrn'iost or covering shutter The i: lividual slots are connected with ea 2 othe by longitin'linal cordsv which are attached to the llengcs of tiresome. Thewind l' we inz np roller is locked by a paw-iand ratchat device. and operated by a hand-crank or other le device. in the 'mscompanying drawings, Figure 1 r-egrcsents a plan of my improved sl yl'i; htshutter, p; rtly in section, showing the shutter.
' lion; and. Figs. 2 and 3 are veritudinill sections on line :r, li'ig. 11, showing; inn shutter rospcctivizly in closed po siiiuz; and l'oldml up at one side of the casing.
Similar letters of rt-fm'cncc indicate corrothe drawings, A represents the casing. which is closed by it skylight of any approved constrnction.- 'lhc casing A is pro- (No model.)
flange, b, which extends over the remaining slats b b when the same are folded up, as shown in Fig. 3. v
The shutter B is folded npby cords or chains e e, of which the cord e is attached to the flange b of the outermost slat b, and passed over a guide-pnllcy, e, to a pulley, e, on a shaft, E, while the cord e is attached to the opposite edge of the outermost slat Z), and also wound up on the pulley 0, but in opposite direction to the cord 0, as shown in Fig. l.
'lheshutter Bis extended, so as to close the casing A,l)y two c0rds,ff, which are attached to the outermost end slat, near the corners of the saine, and passed over pulleys f and through holes f of the casingfto pullcyf on the shaft ll, asishown in Figs. 1, 2, and 3.
The shaft E turns in suitable bearings attached to brackets'at the outside of the casing A.
On turning the shaft E in one direction the cords ffextend the shutter and place the slats in closed position on the supporting-flange a, as shown in Fig. 3, while the cords c c are simultaneously unwound from the pulley c. On turning the shaft E in opposite direction the shutter is opened by the cords e a and. folded up at one side of thccasingA; as shown in Fig. 3, the cords 7" being unwound from the pulleys f at the samev time. I
The shaft 1*] is turned by a handcrank, g, or other suitable means, and serves, in conncctionwith the cords o c andffand d d, to fold up or extend thoshnttcr It. When the shutter is folded and raised on its, hinge-connection with the casing, the outermost slat b incloses, by its wider flange, I), the Slots 7) b, as shown in Fig.
The shaft 1' is locked in open or closed position by means of a ratchet and pawl, h lb, the pawlbeing released from the ratchet-wheel whenever the shutter is to he folded or extended, and dropped again intothe ratchetwhcel when it is desired to retain the shi'itt-cr in folded or extended position.
'lhe-shuttcr forms a. protective device for the shafts or skylightmso as to prevent cllhctually the draft generally produced through the sl tyli ht-shnft in cascof fire, and bring thereby the hm within easier control, while it forms, alsrnto some extent-n1. safety device against the entrance of lnlrglars through the skylight.
Having thus described my invention,I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent- 1. The combination, with a skylight casing or shaft having a supportingfiauge of a. shutter composed of slats,'the innermost end slat being hinged to the casing and the outermost slat provided with aflange extending at right angles thereto, longitudinal cords connecting said slats, and mechanism, substantially as de scribed, whereby said shutter-slats are either folded up at one side of the casing or extended so as to close the casing, substantially as shown and described.
2. The combinatiom with a skylight shaft or casing having a supporting guide-flange, of a folding shutter formed of slats connected by longitudinal cords, the innermost slat being hinged to the casing and the outermost slat provided with a covering-flange, a shaft having pulleys, cords connecting the outermost slat with one pulley in said shaft for opening and folding the shutter, and cords, also connecting ,the outermost slat with pulleys on said'shait, for extending the shutter and closing the casing, substantially as shown and de- 25 scribed. v
3. The combination, with a skylight shaft or casing, A, having asupporting guide-flange, a, of a folding shutter, B, composed of flanged slats b b, connected by longitudinal cords d d, 30 the innermost slatbeing hinged to one side of the casin while the outermost slat is' rovided wit a wider flange, b, ashaft, F, aving pulleys e andf", cordsc c and ff, uizdepulleys c f, and a pawl-and-ratchet evice, 35 h h, substantially as set forth.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing as my invention I have signed my name in pres ence of two subscribing witnesses.
I JAMES E. BRIGGS.
