\ STOVE-PIPE.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 361,861, dated April 26, 1887.
Application filed January 28, 1887. Serial No. 225,797. (No model.)
To aZZ whmn it may concern:
Be it known that I, BENJAMIN F. CALD- WELL, a citizen of the United States, residing at Wheeling, in the county of Ohio and State of West Virginia, have invented new and useful Improvements in Stove-Pipes, of which the following is a specification.
In the manufacture of stove-pipes it is very desirable to send out to the trade what are known as partiallymade stove pipe sections, to be subsequently completed and connected by the dealer, or even by the purchaser, through the medium of flanged caps engaging longitudinal flanges on the pipe-sections. In such stove-pipes it has been found difficnlt to complete and unite the sections so as to obtain certainty and accuracy of fit, and to have the seams in all the sections match when the stovepipe is erected.
The objects of myinvention are to improve such stove-pipes; to provide novel means for obtaining an accurate and certain fit between the adjoining ends of Stovepipe sections which have their edges connected by a flanged and sliding cap; to provide a novel construction of parts, whereby a long horizontal or vertical stove-pipe can be erected without liability to sag, and whereby wire or other pipe-supports from the wall or ceiling are rendered unnecessary.

In order to enable those skilled in the art to make and use my invention, I will now describe the salnein detail, referring to the drawings, where- The numeral 1 indicates a stove-pipe section having one end crimped, as at 2, to facilitate its insertion into another pipe-section. The pipe-section at each longitudinal edge is turned inwardly to form flanges 3 8, which are connected by a joining-cap, 4, having longitudinal flanged edges 5, which can be slid along the flanges 3 and be engaged therewith to form the pipe-seam. In placing thisjoining-cap in position one of its ends is left to project some distance beyond the end of the pipe-section, as shown at 6, so that these extending ends 6 alternately engage and clamp .the flanges 3 3 of the pipe-sections, as in Fig. 6, so that all the joiningcaps break joints with the connected ends of the pipe-sections, thereby so strengtheningtheinthatlongstove-pipes,either horizontal or vertical, can be erected without liability of sagging or displacementof the sections, so that pipe-supports of wire or other devices from the wall or ceiling may be dispensed with.
To obtain an accurate fit between the ends of the stove-pipe sections, and to provide with certainty that all the seams match, I construct the end of the pipe-section which is opposite the end where the joining-cap 5 is left projecting with tapering or wed ge-shaped slot or open ing 7, formed at the point Where the pipeseam terminates. (See Fig. 1.) The inner end of the joining-cap 5 terminates at the inner end of this tapering or wedge-shaped slot, so that one side of thelatter is formed by one of the flanges 8, and this side of the slot is straight and in line with the pipe-seam.
In connecting the ends of two pipe-sections the slotted end of one section is forced into the end of the other section where the j oining-cap projects, as at 69. This tapering slot 7 in the end of the pipe-sections thus not only serves as a gage or guide to receive the flanges 3 of thepipe-sections, and thus place all the pipe in line, but when the pipesections are forced one into the other the edge of the wedge-shaped pipe, as shown in Fig. 8.

By the described means of connecting the pipe-sections the manufacturer or wholesale dealer is enabled to ship large quantities of unjointed pipe-sections, one within another, with the caps detached and placed together in a package, ready to be connected when required.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim is- 1. Astove-pipe consisting of pipe-sections joined by sliding the end of oneinto the other,-
and each section having longitudinal edge flanges, and provided at one end with a tapering slot to embrace and press together the flanged edges of the adjacent pipe-section, and flanged caps for connecting the flanged edges of the capsections, substantially as described.
2. A stove-pipeconsisting ofa series ofpipesections having longitudinally-flanged edges, and each connected by a flanged cap extending from the end thereof,said sections having their ends inserted, the one into the other, with the caps overlapping the joints,and each pipe-section having at one end a slot embracing and clamping the opposite flanged edges of the adjacent pipe-section, substantially as described.
