SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 361,668, dated April 26, 1887.

To all whom, t may concern.-
Be it known that I, WHEELER BEERs, a citizen ot the United States, residing at Bridgeport, in the county of Fairfield and State of Connecticut, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Lathe-Chucks; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
My invention is adapted for use upon all classes of lathes, and will be found especially valuable when applied to lathes for turning wagon-axles and parts of a similar nature. The essential requirements in devices of this class are that they shall be simple, strong, quick-acting, and practically impossible to get out of repair. In order to accomplish these results-to produce, in brief, a chuck which shall consist offew parts all easy to mak e,
` and in which the cost of construction shall be reduced to the minimum-I have devised the novel construction of which the following description, in connection with the accompanying drawings, is a specification.
Figure 1 is a front elevation of a head-stock of a lathe with the face-plate removed, the jaws being in the closed position, Fig. 2, a similar view showing the jaws in the'open position; Fig. 3, a central section on the line x x in Fig. 1; and Fig. 4 is a central section on the liney/ y in Fig. 2.
1 denotes the head-stock, which may be of any ordinary or preferred construction, and motion may be imparted thereto in any preferred manner.Y As shown in the drawings, the head-stock is rotated by means of gearing.
2 is a raised iiange cast upon the face of the head stock. Upon the inner side of this flange, on opposite sides of the head-stock, are straight walls 3,which form bearings for a sliding yoke, 4.
5 denotes a solid block at the center of the head-stock, which is provided with a central squared opening, 6, and with ways 7, in which jaws 8 slide. The inner edges of the sliding yoke are provided with inclines 9, and the rear ends of the jaws with corresponding inclines,which engage therewith, causing them to slide transversely to the yoke. The faces of the jaws are provided with right-angled Serial No. 225,122. (No model.)
notches 10,which correspond with the central opening through the headstock when thejaws are in the opened position. rIhe jaws are connected to the sliding yoke by means of links 11,which are provided wit-h pins 12 at their opposit-e ends. The pins at the inner ends of the yoke engage holes 13 in thejaws, and the pins at the outer ends engage inclines 14 upon the back of the sliding yoke. Starting in the position shown in Fig. 1, it will be apparent that as the yoke is raised the engagement of the pins at the outer ends of the links,with inclines 14, will carry the jaws to the position shown in Fig. 2. Starting in the position shown in Fig. 2, it will be apparent that as the yoke is forced down the engagement of the rear ends of the jaws,with inclines 9 upon the inner sides of the yoke,will force the jaws to the closed position, as in Fig. 1.
The yoke may of course be operated in any suitable manner. I preferably, however, operate it by means of a screw, 15, which engages a central hub, 16, upon the yoke. .'Ihe inner end of the screw bears against kblock 5 and the outer end projects through the fiange, being Vprovided with a head, 17, for the application of a wrench.
18 denotes a collar upon the screw, which engages the inner side of the flange, to prevent endwise motion of the screw.
The parts may be readily taken out at any time by removing plate 19,which his into the liange and holds the screw to its operative position.
20 is a eounter-balance,which is preferably cast upon the inner side of the flange, to balance the screw and yoke.
The parts are all held in their operative position by means of a faceplate, 2l, having a central opening, 22, held in position by screws 23, engaging the iiange.
It will of course be apparent that the details of construction-as, for example, the shape of the sliding yoke and the parts operating in connection therewith-may be varied to an almost unlimited extent without depart. ing from the principle of my invention.
I claim* 1. A lathe-chuck consisting, essentially, of rco pins at opposite ends,which engage said jaws,v and inclines 14E upon the yoke, substantially as and for the purpose set forth.
2. The combination, in a lathechnck, of a 5 sliding yoke having inclines with jaws sliding at right angles thereto and links connected to said jaws, and also engaging inclines upon the yoke, substantially as described.
3. The sliding yoke having inclines 9 and 1o 14 and the sliding jaws whose rear ends engage inclines 9, in combination with links connected to said jaws and having pins at their rear ends engaging inclines 14:, so that when the sliding yoke is moved outward the jaws I5 are retracted by the engagement of the pins with inclines 14, and when the yoke is moved inward the jaws are closed by the engagement of their rear ends with inclines 9.
4. A lathe-head stock having a flange, 2, 2o with straight walls 3, and a sliding yoke heal ing on said walls and provided with inclines 9 and 14, substantially as shown, in combination with sliding jaws engaging one set of inclines and links connected to said jaws and 25 engaging the other set of inclines.
5. A lathe-head stock having a flange, 2, and central block, 5, in combination with a sliding yoke engaging said flange, jaws sliding in said block, links connecting said jaws with the yoke, and a screw engaging said yoke and 3o held against endwise movement, whereby the yoke may be moved in or ont to close or re# tract the jaws.
6. A lathe-head stock having a flange, 2, j and a block, 5, the sliding yoke, the sliding 35 jaws, and links connecting said yoke and said jaws, in combination with a screw engaging the yoke and bearing against the block and flange and face-plate2l, having acentral opening secured to the flange, whereby the opera 4o tive parts are covered and held in position.
