UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
JAMES 0. GRANT AND JARVIS C. BRUSH, OF NEWBUBG, N153" YORK.
HAT-FELITING MACHINE.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters PatentNo. 361,58 6, dated April 19, 1887. Application filed November 12, 1886. Serial No. 218,704; (No model.)
Belt-pulleys H H revolve with the central gear-wheels, FF, on the shafts G G, being attached to projecting bosses on the said gearwheels, or otherwise connected thereto. By these pulleys the central gear-wheels, F F, are driven independently to revolve the sizingrollers in the usual manner; or the said gearwheels may be connected and revolved in any suitable manner from a common driving-shaft.
The feed-openings, instead of being located in the forward drum-heads, as usual, are arranged at the tops of the drums, vertical guidechutes I I being secured in position thereon, and the forward ends of the upper rollers, D
in either machine being cut away to permit the hat-bodies to fall into the forward ends of the passageways between the series of rollers.
To the rear drum-head, C O, of each machine is attached the lower end of an inclined conveyerbox or casing, J J, leading from the usual discharge-opening in said drum-head to the feed or supply chute I l of the other machine.
WVithin each box or casing J J is inclosed an endless carrier, K K, of suitable construction, which is in position to receive the hat- To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that we, JAMES 0. GRANT and JARVIS 0. Reese, both of Newburg, in the. county of Orange and State of New York, have invented a new and Improved Hat-Felting Machine, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description.
The object of our invention is to provide simple and efficient means for rendering the operation of felting hats continuous, and thus obviating the necessity of the operatorstransferring the hat-bodies from the sizing-machine through which they have last passed to the next succeding, thereby greatlyincreasing the rapidity of the work.
The invention consists, principally,in connecting the sizing-machines by a .conveyer leading from the discharge opening of one machine to the feed-opening of the next succeeding.
The inventson also consists in the construction and combination of parts and details, as hereinafter clearly described, and particularly pointed out in the claims.
Reference is to be had to the accompanying drawings, forming a part of this specification, in which similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts in all the figures.
Figure l is an end elevation of two sizingniachines connected and constructed according to our invention. Fig. 2 is a reduced 1ongitudinal sectional elevation on the line or m, Fig. 1. Fig. 3 is a reduced plan view.
The sizingmachines are arranged in reverse portions and are of the usual description, having the horizontal drums A A, supported at their ends on the vertical frames B B" B B, the heads 0 O (1 G of the drums being'attached to or formed integrally with the vertical end frames.
Each drum A A incloses a series of (in the present case) four tapering sizing-rollers, D D, obliquely arranged with respect to each other and having a central passage-way between them for the hat-bodies to be felted.
The rollers of either machine are journaled in the heads of the drums, and the journals are prolonged at one end of each drum and carry gear-wheels E E, surrounding and in gear with central gear-wheels, F F, which revolve on short shafts or studs G G, attached to the dru mheads C C".
one machine and carry them upward into the feed-chute of the other machine, when they are dumped and again subjected to the act-ion of the sizing-rollers, as before described.
In the illustrations annexed we have shown each carrier-belt mounted on two pulleys, L L, each upper pulley,L, being journaled in the top of the carrier-box, while each lower pulley, L, is fixed upon the projecting journal of one of the lower sizing-rollers, D D, by the rotation of which motion is imparted to the endless carrier.
In order that access maybe had to the hatbodies while under treatment in the machines, we provide that part of each carrier-box J J which extends over the discharge-opening in the drum-head to which it is attached with a hinged door, M, opening outward, by means of which the hat-bodies, having been thoroughly sized and felted by the repeated passages through the two machines alternately, maybe removed to allow of the substitution of a fresh batch of goods through either feed-chute I I.
Hot water is. supplied to either drum A A bodies issuing from the discharge-opening of dipping them by by pipesN N leading into the bottom of the same, so that by keeping the level of the hot water in the drums so high as to partially immerse the lower sizing-rollers the hat-bodies are continually moistened to the required degree, thus avoiding the necessity of removing the hat-bodies and dipping them into hot water at repeated stages of the operation.
Vhen dry steam is required, as at the fin ishing stages of the treatment, the same is admitted through steam-pipes O 0 leading into the tops of the drums.
By thus connecting two independent feltingmachines the unsized hat-bodies may be thrown promiscuously into the feed-chutes of either machine without wrapping them in cloth and hand, as is the usual method. The bodies are kept constantly revolving, folding and unfolding, and are wet by the immersed rollers and by the steam, so that they are thoroughly felted in a short space of time without removing them from the machine. A series of machines may be connected in like manner, if desired, and the hot-water and steam connections may more of the machines.
Having thus described our invention, what we claim as new, and desire to secure by Let ters Patent, is- Y be provided on one or 1. The combination, witlr two hat-felting machines, of an endless conveyer for carrying the hat-bodies from the discharge o ening of one machine into the feed-opening of thee er, substantially as shown and described.
2. The combination, with two hat-felting I machines, of a conveyer-box leading from the dischargeopening of one machine into the I feed-opening of the other, an endless revolving carrier in the conveyer-box, and an 0penin said conveyer-box over the discharge-opening of the machine, which box opening is closed bya door, substantially as herein shown I and described.
3. The combination, with two hatfelting conveyer for carrymachines connected by a 1 ing the hat-bodies from the discharge-opening of one machine into the feed-opening of the I other, of ahot-water-supply pipe leading into the roller-inelosing drum of one machine, snbstantially as shown and described.
