Description

UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE,
EDIVARD WVARSAXV, OF RIOEVILLE, IOWVA.
BOB-SLED.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No.361,5 60, dated April 19, 1887.
Application filed February 14, 1887. Serial No. 227,509.
To all whom it may concern.-'
Be it known that I, EDWARD Witnskw, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of Riceville, in the county of Mitchell and State of Iowa, have invented certain new and use ful Improvements in Oscillating Bob-Sleigh Knees; and Ido hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the invention which will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, which form a part of this specification, and in which- Figure 1 is a perspective view of my improved oscillating knee for bob-sleds. Fig. 2 is a longitudinal vertical sectional View of the same, and Fig. 3 is a transverse sectional view.
Similar numerals of reference indicate corresponding parts in all the figures.
My invention has relation to that class of knees for bobsleds in which a casting secured to the end of the bolster or cross-piece is movably connected to the upper end of the upright portion of the knee; and it consists in the improved construction and combination of parts of such a knee, as hereinafter more fully described and claimed.
In the accompanying drawings the numeral 1 indicates one end or the bolster or crosspiece of the sled, and 2 indicates the runner of the sled, both of which parts may be of any suitable construction.
The upright 3 of the knee is secured with its lower end to a plate or flat base, 4:, having bracing-flanges 5 between the upper side of the base and the upright, the said upright, base, and flanges being preferably cast or made in one piece, and the upper wide end of the uprightis formed with a plate or platform, 6, and with a transverse cylindrical rib or roll, 7, connected to the platform with one side. The base of the upright is secured to the upper side of the runner by means of suitable bolts passing through perforations in the base and in the runner.
A plate, 8, is provided with flanges 9 upon its sides, and the end of the bolster or crosspiece may be secured -between these flanges, suitable bolts passing through the perforations 10 in the flanges; and the under side of the (No model.)
plateis provided with a block or box,1l,having a cylindrical bore, 12, open at the under side and having one end closed and perforated. This box may be fitted with its bore upon the cylindrical roll of the upright and may rock upon the same, and a perforated plate .or cap, 13, is secured over the open end of the box by means of a bolt passed through the perforation in the plate and the roll, said plate bearing against the end of the roll and securing the box in place upon the roll. The box may thus rock upon the joint formed by it and the roll, the play of the joint being limited by the edges of the aperture or slot in the under side of the box, which will bear against the portion of the roll united to the platform as the box is rocked, and the runners of a sled provided with this knee Will thus be allowed to have sufficient play to pass over rough ground and yield to obstructions in the ground and pass over them.
The box may be securely attached to the bolster or cross'beam by the perforated flanges, and the roll may be removed from the box by removing the cap at the end of the box and sliding the roll out at the open end, and may again be placed in position by sliding it in at the open end of the box and securing the cap over the said end, confining the lateral play of the box and the roll.
Having thus described my invention, I claim and desire to secure by Letters Patent of the United States In an oscillating knee for a bob-sled, the combination of an upright adapted to be secured to the sleigh-runner and having a platform and a transverse roll at its top, said roll being perforated, a plate having flanges at its top and a block upon its bottom, said block being provided with a cylindrical bore upon its under side and having one end closed and perforated, a perforated cap, and a bolt.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing as my own I have hereunto affixed. my signature in presence of two witnesses.
EDWARD VVAR-SAWV.
