NITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
JULIAN A. GILES, OF OSIVEGO, NEW YORK, ASSIGNOR TO ALBERT N. RADOLIFFE, OF SAME PLACE.
TUBE EXPANDER.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 361,504, dated April 19, 1887.
Application filed January 27, 1887. Serial N 0. 225,629. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, JULIAN A. Guns, of Oswego, in the county of Oswego, in the State of New York, have invented new and useful Improvements in Tube-Expanders, of which the following, taken in connection with the accompanying drawings, is a full, clear, and exact description.
This invention consists in a novel construction of a tube-expander, which has the expanding-rollers sustained in arigid head or body and held normally in proximity to the axis of said head or body, as hereinafter more fully described, and specifically pointed out in the claims.
The invention is fully illustrated in the aunexed drawings, wherein Figure 1 is a side view of myimproved tubeexpander. Fig. 2 is an end view of the same. Fig. 3 is a longitudinal section on line 9 3 Fig. 2; and Fig. 4. is a transverse section on line :0 :0, Fig. 1.
Similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts.
B represents the expander head or body,
\ consisting of a rigid annular metallic block having an axial eye, a, for the reception of the usual tapering mandrel, A, and radial slots 1) I), through which the expanding-rollers 1' 9' 1 are extended.
' At about midway the depth of the body 13 the aforesaid rollers are formed with circumierentially-reduced journals 0, by which they are journaled on keepers d d d, consisting of blocks arranged in mortises 6 cc, extending \through to the periphery of the body, said keepers being adapted to slide radially toward and from the center of the body 13, and when at their extreme inner position the outer portions of the keepers are fiush with the face of a circumferential groove, in the exterior of the body 13: In thisgroove is placed a springband, f, which encompasses the body B and crowds the keepers d (Z cl inwa-rd,and thus sustains the rollers 9* 0'1 normally in proximity to the axis of the body, B and in proper position to allow the protruding ends of said rollers to be introduced into the end of the tube to be expanded. When this is effected, the mandrel A is introduced between the rollers and forced inward until the rollers are caused to press against the interior of the tube. Then by revolving the mandrel the rollers r a" 1' receive rotary motion by their frictional hold on the mandrel, and in travelingiaround the interior of the tube, while subjected to outward pressure from the mandrel, the tube becomes expanded and tightened in the flue-sheet.
Having described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
1. In combination with the expanding-mandrel, the expander-body having an axial eye and radial slots, the expanding-rollers extending through said slots, keepers seated movably radially in the expander-body and bearing against the sides of the respective rollers, and a spring arranged to crowd the keepers toward the axis of the expanderbody, as set forth.
2. In combination with the expanding-mandrel, the expander-body having an axial eye, radial slots extending from said eye,-an external circumferential groove and .mortises extending from said groove toward the axis of the cxpander'body and in the lines of the radial slots, the expanding-rollers extending through said slots and formed with circumferentially-reduccd journals inside of the expander-body, keepers sliding in the mortises of the body and provided with bearings corresponding to the journal portions of the rollers, and a spring encompassing the expander-body in the external groove thereof, substantially as described and shown.
In testimony whereof I have hereunto signed my name and affixed my seal, in the presence of two attesting witnesses, at Oswego, in the county of Oswego, in the State of New York, this 22d day of January, 1887.
