\ tion, and thus is'under full control of the per son occupying the car.
The invention consists in the combination, with a tubular vballoon','of a propeller-wheel mounted in the bore. of the balloon and connected with pulleys. and'ropes for operating it from theV car, all as will be fully described l and set forth hereinafter', and finally be pointed out in the claims.vv v
In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 is a side View of my improved balloon, parts broken out. Fig. 2 is an endview. Figs. 3 and 4 are side views showing the" same in different positions. ` bore, B, extending from nd to end. On a ofthe balloon,
transverse bar at leach end of the balloona rudder, A, is pivoted, an'd -to the middle of the swinging end of each rudder two ropes, a, are fastened and extend -down to thexcar or carriage D, provided with atransverse shaft, M, carrying at each end a pulley, N, over which an endless rope, E, passes, saidendless ropes also passing over pulleys O at the sides at 'the centerv of the same, the pulleys O being fastened'to the ends of a shaft, I), passed transversely through the balloon, from which shaft l? motion is'transmitted,by means of gearing or other device, to a shaft, Q, journaled Within the bore of the balloon in i cross-pieces R in said bore. These cross-pieces R are connected at their opposite ends for revolving to the inner frame of the balloon-body. One or more propeller-wheels, S', are mounted on the shaft Q in the bore of the balloon. v
A power-transmitting gear, T, is provided, the shaft N from the car or basket. To each end of .the balloonp two ropes,
M, are fastened,- which extend down to the car or basket D. The basket or car D is thus suspended'from-the balloon by means of endless ropes E.
By revolving the shaft M from the car the pulleys N are rotated, and from the same, by means of endless ropes E, the pulleys O, shafts 'P and Q, and wheels S in the balloon are rof tated, whereby the balloon is propelled. By means of ropes a any desired inclination can be givento the'rudders A, and the balloonY th ussteered-in the desired di rection.
When a rudder is to be inclined in a certain direction, the corresponding rope, a, is drawn taut 'and fastened on the car orbasket, and the other one released correspondingly.
to ascend or desired at an inelinaton,the4 ropes' m at one end are tightened, so as to pull down released, so as to permit said end to swing up. The body ofthe balloon for containing the 'gas may comprise a -single annular chamber, as illustrated in Fig. 1, or it may comprise a series of smaller ltubes arranged in annular se'- ries, as shown by dotted linesin Fig. 3.
Having thus describedmy invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by 'Letters Patent- 1. rEhe combination, with a tubular balloon the central bore of which is open at both ends, of propellenwheels mountedin said bore, substantially as described. Y
' 2. A tubular balloon-body having a central bore open at bothends, in combination with t transverse bars vin its bore, a longitudinal shaft journaled in said transverse bars, propeller-wheels onv the longitudinal shaft, and mechanism, substantially as described, for revolving said shaft from the car.
3. The combination, with a tubular balloonbody having a central longitudinal bore, of a longitudinal-shaft journaled in the bore of said balloon-body, propeller Vwheels or wingsv on said shaft, a trausverseshaft extending through the balloon and provided on its ends with pu-lleys, and ropes passing over said pulleys and said end, and-the ropes at the other end are vwhen it is desired that' the balloon shan IOC extending down to the cal', substantially as de scribedi i Y, my invention I have signed my name in pres- 4.
