UNDERGROUND GONDUIT.
WIT/1 58858;
- I I "WE/V705 ATTORNEY Patented Apr. 19, 1887.
UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
ISAIAH PAXSON, OF NEW YORK, N. Y.
UNDERGROUND CONDUIT.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 361,319, dated April 19, 1887.
Application filed January 19,1887. Serial No. 224,766. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, ISAIAH PAXSON, of New York,county of New York,State of New Yprk, have invented a new and useful Improved Underground Conduit, which is fully set forth in the following specification and accompanying drawings, in which Figure 1 is a longitudinal out section of my improved conduit; Fig. 2, an end view of one of the blocks; Fig. 8, an exterior view thereof, exhibiting the ferrule; Fig. 4, the conduit in position, cut away to show the application of the bolts.
The purpose of this invention is to provide a secure and economical means of laying electrical subways with great dispatch, and capable of easy access in case of needed repairs. This is accomplished by the employment of continuous blocks of timber-A A, about three feet in length, with hollow spaces B B, bored from end to end, of sufficient diameter to contain the electric cables to be inserted therein. At one end, of each block insulated enameled ferrules 0 O, are inserted, the spaces B B being counterbored a sufficient depth to receive them.
- Oonnectingrods D D extend through blocks A A,countersunk at one end of each to receive bolt-heads E E and securing-nuts H H when permanent contact is made. The blocks are first treated with creosote or any other suitable antiseptic. These several parts are united into a practical conduit, as follows: Insulated ferrules O O are placed in position in spaces B B at the ends of blocks A A. Two rods, D D, are inserted in each block,the bolt-heads E E falling within the cavities provided therefor. Each of these rods extends through the next succeeding blocl ,witl1 which and its predecessor'a tight joint is formed by tightening securing-nuts H H at the other ends of the rods} The two rods of the second block extend through the third block and are similarly secured, and so on indefinitely.
If a cable requires repair, open the manholes, draw out the cable in the usual way, and reinsert and connect it after the defect is remedied.
Having thus described my improvement, what I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
The combination of spaced wooden blocks A A, ferrules O C, and rods D D, united and operating conj ointl y,substautiall y as set forth.
ISATAH PAXSON.
