SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 361,310, dated April 19, 1887.
Application filed February 17, 1887. Serial No. 227,958. (No model.)
making a part of this specification, and to the letters and figures of reference marked thereon, in which- Figure 1 is a front view. Fig. 2 is a side view omitting the rear wheel or wheels. Fig. 3 is a front sectional view showing yoke and handle-bar. Fig. 4: is an inner view of left hand crank-gear.
The present invention has relation to bicycles; and its nature consists in the different parts and combination of. parts hereinafter claims.
Similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts in all the figures of the drawlugs.
In the accompanying drawings, A represents the propelling-wheel, which is constructed in the ordinary manner, and is provided with the axle or shaft a, said shaft revolving in the bearings located in the bottom or lower ends of the arms B. To the shaft a are rigidly attached twopinions, I), one on each side of the wheel A. The bottom or lower ends of the arms B are provided with the arms 0, which arms are 1)1OVidB(l .Wllih the elongated slots 0, said slots being for the purpose of receiving the bars D, on which the wheels E revolve, the slots 0 being for the purpose of adjusting the bars D in case it is desired to change the size of said wheels E. The wheels E are provided with the cogs d, which are for the purpose of communicating motion to the pinionsb.
The'top or upper ends of the arms B are attached together, as shown in Figs. 1 and 3, thereby forming a yoke, and to this yoke is securely attached the post F, which is for the purpose of attaching thearm Gand the sprocket-wheels H, as hereinafter described.
For the purpose of providing an easy-working joint, the washer e is placed on the yoke, substantially as shown in the drawings, and. the arm G placed on the top of this washer.
The portion of the arm G which fits on the washer e is formed flat, so as to fit on the washer, as shown in Figs. 1, 2, and 3. To the top or upper end of the post F is placed the socket I, said socket being provided with the cross-bar f, to which bar are attached the sprocket-wheels H. These sprocket -wheels are each provided with the handle or crank g. These sprocket-wheels are for the purpose of communicating motion to the wheels E, thereby communicating motion to the wheel A by means of the drive-chains h.
For the purpose of tightening the drivechains h, the post F is provided with a screwthread, which receives the collars h and h, the collar h being for the purpose of elevat-. ing the socket I, thereby causing the sprocketwheel H to be raised. The collar h is for the purpose of holding the front or forward end of the arm G in proper position.
The wheels E are each provided with the cranks J, which are calculated to be operated by the feet.
It will be seen that by our peculiar arrangement an operator can use his hands and feet in propelling the bicycle proper, and that great speed' can be made by reason of the wheels E working on the pinions I). It will be understood that to the rear end of the arm G is attachedfin the ordinary manner, a small traveling wheel, and, if desired, two wheels may be attached to the arm G. It will also be understood that a suitable saddle is to be properly attached to the arm G.
It will be seen that ropes will answer the same purpose as the drive-chains h, the wheels E and H being constructed especially for ropes.
The bicycle proper is to be guided by means of the handles or cranks g. In case it is desired to propel the bicycle only by the feet, the wheels H and drive-chains h are removed and the guide-bar K attached, as shown in Fig. 3, the socket k fitting on the post F and securely held in proper position by means of the set-screw 1'.
Having fully described our invention, what we claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
