Description

UNITED STATES PATENT EEICE.
DAVID S. HITCHCOCK, OF CLEVELAND, OHIO.
,BOTTLE-STOPPER.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 361,285, dated April 19, 1887.
Application tiled February 25, 1887. Serial No. 228,908. (No model.)
To all whom, it 77mg concern:
Be it known that I, DAVID S. HITcHcocK, of the city of Cleveland, county of Cuyahoga, State of Ohio, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Bottle-Stoppers, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to stoppers for tightly closing. the mouths of bottles containing aerated or other liquids, andespecially to the stopper, which is permanently attached to the neck of the bottle by a device which serves to compress the stopper into and to draw it out of the mouth of the bottle; and the object of my improvement is to. provide a practical mechanism for compressing and withdrawing the stopper, and for permanently attaching the same to the bottle. I attain this object by the mechanism illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in which similar letters refer to similar parts throughout the several views.
Figures 1 and 4t are side elevations showing my improvement applied to the neck, head, and mouth of a bottle. Fig. 2 is a front elevation of the same. Fig. 3 is a rear elevation of the sanne. Fig. 5 is a side elevation showing my improved device or mechanism detached from the bottle.
To enable others skilled in the art to make and use my invention, I herewith describe its construction and operation.
A designates the head of the bottle, and D the neck of the bottle.
B designates the bail which serves to connect the device to the bottle, this bail being made of thick wire bent in an approximately U shape, and turned inwardly at its ends to form pivots, as shown at 71, h, its upper part being contracted in such manner as to form a short straight section, as shown at X, around which the upper end of the lever L is at-Lv tached or coiled. A smaller wire, m, encircles the neck of the bottle under the head Aat and near where it .isjoined to the neck, and is coiled around the ends h h of the bail B, as at n n, to pivotally connect the bail to the neck of the bottle, and the ends of said wire are twisted or otherwise fastened at K, so as to securely hold the bail in position.
The stopper C may be constructed in any suitable form of a rubber or other elastic washer or gasket, c, surrounding or attached to a solid or rigid central portion, C, surmouuted by a flat disk-shaped head, d. Upon the head of d is formed a lug, e, having an opening or orifice, for the purpose hereinafter specified.
L designates the lever or handle for operating the device. This lever is formed of a iiat stili' piece of metal of suitable length, and bent outwardly at X3, contiguous to its end X4, so as to form a thumb-piece, by which the required upward and downward pressure is applied to the lever. The lever is also bent at X2, so as to pass over the top of the stopper and under the bail B, and its upper end is bent or coiled around the straight top section ofthe bail, as at X', securing the lever to the bail in such way as to allow the lever to turn freely on the bail. Attached to the lever L at or near the point B, by a rivet 0r other suitable device, is a spring, S, made cfa dat piece of stiff steel or other suitable material, and extending over and bent or coiled through the orifice of the lug e, securing it to the lug in such a way as to allow it to turn freely on the lug. The lever is attached to the bail and the spring to the lug in such manner that when the lever is depressed the bail is carried past the center on the lever side, so that the stopper is tightly pressed into the mouth of 8O the bottle, and the spring exerts such pressure on the stopper that the stopper always-and especially when by use or otherwise the elastic washer has lost any of its elasticitye-is kept tightly pressed into the mouth of the bottle.
The lever L may be constructed of a dat stiff piece of metal of suitable length to allow it to be bent upon itself at a point about midway ot its length, as shown in Fig. l, the lowerV or under side of which, when riveted or otherwise fastened at B and its end bent or coiled on the lug, as above described, shall form the spring S.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
1. In abottle-stopper, thecon1bination,with the bail and stopper, of the bent lever secured to the bail, and the spring riveted oifotherwise secured to the lever and coiled over and through the lug on the stopper, all constructed and operated substantially as shown.
2. The combination, with the'bottle having IOO a head, A, and neck D, and a wire bail, B, or otherwise secured to the lever and coiled wit-h its ends bent as shown at h 7L, of a Wire, over and through the lug, substantially as and m, a stopper, constructed substantially as defor the purposes shown and described.
scribed, havinga lug with one orifice, alever, DAVID S. HITCHCOCK. L, composed of a fiat; stiff piece of metal, hav- XVitnesses: ing the bends X X2 X X, and a spring, S, H. S. SHERMAX,
composed of a dat piece of stiff 111etal,rivetcd A. C. DUsTIN.
