UNITED STATES PATENT OEETCE.
JACOB B. HARTMAN, OF VOOSTER, OHIO.
BLIND.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 360,523, dated April 5, 1887.
Application filed July ll, 1885.
To @ZZ whom t may concern.-
Beit known that I, .Ireen B. HARTMAN, a citizen of the United States, residing at Vooster, in the county of Wayne and State of Ohio, have invented a new and useful Window-Blind, of which the following is a specification.
My improvement relates to inside windowblinds which slide up and down along the window-jambs inside the sashes in longitudinal grooves, the object being to provide a device of this character that will be cheap and durable in its construction.
My invention consists in combining with the window-frame a pocket for storing the blindsections, separable extended guide-strips, and an adjustable panel-back.
My invention further consists in the details of construction and combination of parts hereinafter fully described, and pointed out in the claims. I attain these objects by the devices illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in which* Figure lis a front view of a window, a panelback, and window-sill, the several blind-sections being inclosed in the recess or pocket thus formed behind the panel-back and sill bclow the window. Fig. 2 is a vertical sectional view of the saine on the line a". m. Fig. 3 is a transverse horizontal section of the same on the line g/ 1/.- Fig. 4 shows the sill opened by a lid exposing the upper ends of the several blind-sections and panel-back. Fig. 5 is a view of my adjustable vertically-sliding panelback withdrawn from the guide-strips.
Referring to the drawings, F are the jambs of an ordinary window-frame.
J are separable guide-stri ps secured upon the jambs, provided with a series of longitudinal grooves, e, to receive and guide the several sliding sections.
A B R indicate several sections of sliding blinds, such as heretofore used for similar purposes.
P is a panel-back, which is made to take the place of a sliding blind-section, and for such purpose is independent of the sill. As such it is adapted to slide vertically past the sill in any of the series of grooves-1v, and to be placed in any desired position in the window.
C is a window-sill, which is provided with a longitudinal opening, through which the blinds are passed into the pocket under the sill. This serial No. 171,371.
(No model.)
opening may bc covered by means of the lid L, which is hinged to open and close at pleasure, leaving the sillstationary in the frame, instead of connecting it with the innermost section and elevating the entire sill with the section to which it is attached, as has heretofore been done.
I am aware that it is old to arrange doors and window-sashes so that they can be slid down below the level of the floor, and I lay no claim thereto, as such arrangement does notk in any way answer thepurposes of myinvention; also, that it is not new to carry the blinds below the window along grooves formed in the jambs extended below the window for such purpose.
Heretofore separable guide-strips have been limited to the space between the window-sill and the `top of the window, and I do not claim such. My improvement lies in the use of separable guide-strips attachable upon the j ambs J, and extended through and beyond the lower sill of the window, to carry the blinds out of the way of the saine, so as not to obstruct the light as heretofore.
It will also be seen that my device affords the double advantage of a stationary sill entirely independent of the several blind-sections, as well as a suitable pocket for storing the blinds; also, by providing a panel-back to take the place of one of the sliding blinds adjacent to the sill when the panel-back is in position below the sill and the lid L is closed, the several blind-sections may be either in positiou in the window or stored in the pocket behind the vertically-movable panel-back; or, if preferred, the panel-back may be "placed above the sill, leaving one or more of the several blinds stored below the sill. To accommodate the blinds and provide a pocket therefor either above or below the window, a recess is made in the wall sufficient to allow the separable extended guide-strips J to carry the sliding sections out of the way of the window, as aforesaid.
I am aware that heretoforeastationary panelback has been employed with sliding blindsections and guide-strips; hence I make no claim to such a combination; but,
Having thus -fully described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
l. The combination, with the stationary sill IOC:
C, provided with an opening, L, to allow the back, P, whereby one or more of the blind-71o Several sliding sections to pass through the Sections may be concealed below the sill, subsame, of the adjustable panel-back P and the stantially as described. separable extended guide-strips J, to form a In testimony whereof Ihereunto set my hand 5 pocket for the blinds, substantially as set forth. in presence of two Witnesses.
Y2. The combination, with a window-frame JACOB B. HARTMAN. having a sill-opening covered. by it lid, L, of Y'Vitnesses: separable extended guide strips, a Series of H. B. SWARTZ, sliding blind-sections, and amovoble panel- C. M. YooUM.
