To rtZZ whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, CHARLES H. HOLT, a subject of the Queen of Great Britain and he land, residing in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, have invented certain Improvements in Fuel- Economizers and Feed \Vater Heaters, of which the following is a specification.
My invention consists of certain improve ments in the tube structure of a fuel-economizer or feed-water heater, such as that shown in my Letters Patent No. 328,220, dated October 18, 1885, the objects of my present invention being to insure the thorough circulation of the water through the tubes of the heater and to provide for the ready removal and replacing of any of the tubes without disturbing the others or the fixed part of the structure.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 is a plan view of a fuel-economizer or feed-water heater constructed in accordance with my in vention; Fig. 2, a sectional view, partly in elevation, on the line] 2, Fig. 1; Fig. 3, a similar View on the line 3 4, Fig. 1; Figs. 4, 5, 6, and 7, sectional views, ona larger scale, illustrating one of the features of my invention 5 Fig. 8, an inverted plan view of one of the cap-plates forming part of the structure, and Fig. 9 a perspective View of one of the clam pbolt-s shown in Figs. 4 to 7.
In Fig. 1, A A represent the opposite side walls of the flue in which the fueleconomizer is placed, the tube structure of the economizer consisting of a series of transverse boxes, B, resting at the ends upon the opposite side walls, and each carrying a series of depending tubes, D, which project into the fine.
Each box B is divided by a partition, a, into two chambers, d and f, the chamber 1 beneath the partition communicating directly with the tubes D at the upper ends thereof, and .the chamber f above thepartition communicating with the tubes D near the lower ends thereof through internal tubes, F, of smaller diameter than the tubes D, these tubes F being suspended froin the partition a, so that water en tering the inlet-chamberf is caused to first descend the tubes F and then ascend the annular spaces between said tubes and the shells of the tubes D to the exit-chamber (1.
Each box B has at one end a neck, f, coinmnnicating with the inlet-chamber f, and at the opposite end a neck, d, communicating with the exit chamber d of the box, and in arranging the boxes in series, as shown in Fig. 1, said boxes are placed in reverse orderthat is to say, the neck (1 of one box is adjacent to the neck f of the adjoining box, so that when these two necks are connected by means of a curved pipe, 9, the discharge-chamber of the first box of the series will deliver into the inlet-chamber of the second box of the series, the discharge-chamber of the latter delivering into the inlet chamber of the third box of the series, and so on to the end, so that feed-water entering the heater through the pipe to is compelled to traverse the tubes of each box in succession until it finally escapes through the exit-pipe x.
The cold Water preferably enters the heater at that end farthest from the furnace, so that in passing from one box to the other of the series it is subjected to a constantly-increasing temperature, and is consequently discharged from the apparatus in a very highly-heated condition.
In a structure of the class to which my invention relates it is important that any one of the tubes of the structure may be readily re moved for repairs, and as readily reinserted or replaced by a new one; hence in carrying out my invention I secure the tubes D to the bosses on the lower shell of the box 13 by expanding the upper end of each tube into its seat in the boss, as shown in Fig. 4, and I form in the partition to, immediately above each tube D, an opening, i, of a diameter large enough to permit the vertical withdrawal of the tube D through the same, a similar opening, m, being formed in the top of the box. Each opening i in the partition a is closed by a plug, a, which supports the internal tube, F, the latter having at the upper end a flange, a, resting upon the plug, as shown in Fig. 4.
The opening in in the top of the box is closed by a cap-plate, p, which is secured in position by clamp-bolts 5, having hooked lower ends for engaging with the top plate of the box, nuts 8 being adapted to these bolts and bearing upon the top of the cap -plate 1). Each bolt 3 is squared or flattened at the head, and when the bolt is in position for err squared or flattened portion of the head bears against a lug, t, on the under side of the plate p, the bolt being thereby prevented from turning so as to free it from engagement with the shell, (see Fig. 4;) but upon loosening the nut the bolt will drop sufficiently to free its squared or flattened head from the control of the lug t, whereupon the bolt can be turned, as shown in Figs. 5 and 8, so as to free it from engagement with the shell of the box and permit the cap-plate to be lifted from the box, as shown in said Fig. 5. By this means a simple slackening of the nuts and a half-turn of each bolt is sufficient to free the cap-plate and permit the removal of the same, the reapplieation of the plate being effected by a reversal of these operations.
WVhen the cap-plate is removed, the tube F and plug it can be readily Withdrawn Vertically through the opening m, as shown in Fig. 6, and when these are removed the tube D can be Withdrawn through the openings-tand m, as shown in Fig. 7, by means of'a suitable lifting-rod adapted to the hooked head of the confining-bolt w for the washer-plates closing the lower end of the tube, the tubes and coverplate being reapplied with equal readiness, so that, so far as concerns examination, removal, insertion, or repairs, each tube of the structure is independent of all the others and of the fixed portion of the apparatus.
The cover-plate p is preferably provided with studs 11, which bear upon the plug it and prevent the accidental displacement of the same. (See Fig. 4.) i
In Fig. 1 of the drawings I have shown the confining bolts and nuts on the cap-plates of one only of the boxes B, in order to prevent confusion.
1' claim as my invention-- 1. The combination of the double tubes with a series of boxes arranged in reverse or-' der and each having an inlet and outlet chamher, with pipes connecting the outlet-chamber of one box with the inlet-chamber of the next' box of the series, all substantially as specified.
2. The combination of depending tubes D with a box carrying the same and'h'aving openings in the top, througlrwhich said tubes can be withdrawn vertically, all substantially as specified.
3. The combination-of depending tubes D with a box having an internal partition and top plate, in which are formed openings to permit the vertical withdrawal of said tubes,
and with internal tubes carried by stoppers 0r plugs adapted to the openings of the internal partition of the box, all substantially as specified.
4. The combination of the cover-plate of the box and its openings with the closing-caps and hooked clamp-bolts and nuts for securing said caps, all substantially as specified.
5. The combination of the cover-plate of the box and its openings with the closing-caps having lugs on the underside and hooked clamp-bolts having heads squared or flattened for engagement with said lugs, all substantially as specified.
6. The combination of the box and its partition, plugs closing openings in said partition, and cap-plates closing openings in the top of the box and having studs ibrretaining the plugs, as set forth. a
