ELEVATOR.

Illlllllllllm- I Tim WZ/flsss as UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
GEORGE B. BERGEN, OF MIIAVAUKEE, \VISCONSIN.
ELEVATOR.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 360,270, dated March 29, 1887.
Applioatioufiled Xovemberfi,1886. Serial No. 218,133. (No model.)
To (LZZ whom, it may concern:
Be it known that I, GEORGE B. BERGEN, of Milwaukee, in the county of Milwaukee, and in the State of \Visconsin, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Elevators; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof.
My invention relates to elevators; and it consists in certain peculiarities of construction, to be hereinafter described with reference to the accompanying drawings and subsequently claimed.
In the drawings, Figure 1 represents a vertieal transverse sectional view of an elevator constructed according to my invention; Fig. 2, a similar View at right angles to Fig. 1; Fig. 3, a horizontal section on the irregular line w as, Fig. 1; Figs. 4 and 5, detail views of the indicator mechanism.
Referring by letter to the drawings, A represents an elevator-cab operative in suitable guides, 13, said cab having a false bottom, 0, that is provided with tracks a for the wheels I) of movable weightsD, the latter being either solid metal or boxes containing sand, shot, or other heavy substances. Fulcrumed to the under side of the true bottom 0 of the cab A are a series of bell-cranks, 0, each having one arm thereof pivotally connected to a pedal, d, that extends up into said cab, while the other arm impinges against a corresponding catchframe, 0, fulcrumed atfto the false bottom 0, a stop, 9, serving to limit the movement of this catch-frame.
The chamber G", formed by the true and false bottoms of the cab A, comes in and out of register with chambers E, arranged at different elevations in a wall, F, of the elevatorshaft. The floors of the chambers E are also provided with tracks a for the weights D, and catch-frames e are fulerumed at f to these floors, to impinge againstlevers G, fulcrumed at h and operated by cords 2', extended through the wall F to come within reach of the operator in the cab, the movement of said catchframes 6 being limited by stops 9.
Fast to the under side of the false bottom 0 of the cab A is one end of a cable, H, that carries a counterpoise, I, and extends up over a pulley, K, that is intended to be journaled in suitable bearings at the top of the elevatorshaft, the cable being then carried down and made fast to the top of said cab.
At the bottom of the elevator-shaft are two pulleys, j j, on which operate a cable, L, usually of less diameter than the main one, H, and from these pulleys the cable L extends up through the cab A, a turn being taken around a pulley, M, that has extended journals k k, operativein bearings mm, depending from the roof of said cab. From the pulley M the cable L is carried up and on over the main pulley K, friction-pulleys am being suitably arranged to act as guides for said cable. The ends of the cable L are oppositely passed around a pulley, 0, that isjournaled to brackets 1) upon a side wall of the cab, and said ends of this cable are finally secured to a spring-bolt, N, that automatically engages recesses 1, arranged at suitable intervals in a wall of the elevator shaft, and thus lock the cab in position at the elevation it may attain corresponding with each of said recesses.
The spring-bolt N engages'the forked augular end 8 of a lever, O, fnlcrumed att to the outside of the cab A, the other end of this lever being connected by a cord, u, with the spindle o of an indieator'finger, o, for a dial, 1?, fast on the inside of said cab, a volute spring, to, serving to cause a return of the finger to its normal position after being actuated,in the manner to be hereinafter described.
The journals k k are provided with drums y y, on which are wound cords z 2, that suspend folding seats R R, operative in suitable guides, q; and suitably secured to the inner sides of the cab are steps S S,- that assist the operator to get upon said seats.
In describing the operation of my invention we will suppose the elevator-cab A to be down, as shown by Figs. 1 and 2, and the several part-s in equipoise.
When the operatorsteps into the cab, the latter will be thrown out of balance and cause a depression of the lever 0, whereby the finger 1) will be actuated to indicate on the dial P the approximate weight of said operator. By actuating one or more of the pedals d, the corresponding catch frame or frames will be actuated to discharge from the false bottom 0 of the cab into an adjacent chamber, E, a Weight or weights, D, approximately to the heft of the operator, thereby bringing the cab and occupant into balance, or nearly so, with the .counterpoise I and ready for the ascension.
The operator now gets upon the seatR, and
his weight causes the cable L to tighten and thereby draw the spring-bolt N, said seat running down in its guides q, thereby revolving the journals 70 7c and pulley M, the latter by its cable-connection in turn actuating the pulley K in such a direction as to make the counterpoise on the cable H descend and, in consequence of such operation, elevate the cab.
In case the counterpoisedoes not serve to cause a full ascension of the cab, or greater speed is desirable, the operator may aid the ascent by pulling on the cable L; or, if desired, a greater number of the weights may be thrown off prior to the start.
As the seat It descends, the empty one, B, is carried up, and thus brought into position for another operation, the fall of said seats being proportioned tothe height of the elevator-shaft, or, in other words, to the length of the main cable K, and their suspensioncords z z wound in opposite directions. WVhen thecab is at the desired height, the operator gets off the seat, and the cable L is thus given sufficient slack to permit the spring-bolt to engage with the recess r, with which it now comes into register. To make the descent, the operator gets upon the seat R, and spring-bolt N is drawn'out, as above described, whenby his weight said seat is caused to descend and the pulleyK to revolve in a reverse direction to that described for the ascension.
In order to hasten the descent, a lever, G, maybe actuated to release a catch-frame, e, and thereby add a weight, D, to the cab; or the cable L may be pulled upon to accomplish or facilitate the accomplishment of the same result.
In case more than one person be carried in the cab or the latter be filled with people and baggage, the heft will be indicated on the dial 1? by the finger v, and the operator can c'orrcspondingly manipulate the weights D, in the manner above described, according to the load.
The seats R R are made folding, in order that the operator may readily get at the levercords i in case the latter been that side of the elevator-shaft.
Having thus fully described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
1. An elevator cab, in combination with weights mounted on wheels and means, substantially as described, for transferring said pivoted catches arranged to engage the weights,
and suitable levers for disengaging said catches, substantially as and for the purpose set forth.
5. An elevator-cab provided with tracks, in combination with chambers leading from the elevator-shaft and provided with tracks arranged to come in register with those on the cab, weights mounted on wheels, and means, substantially as described, for transferring the weights to and from said cab and chambers, for the purpose set forth.
6. An elevator-cab provided with a pulley having extended journals, and vertical sliding seats operatively connected to said journals and arranged to move in opposite directions, in combination with a counterpoise-cable operatively arranged on both pulleys, and transferable weights, substantially as and for the purpose set forth. v
7. An elevator-cab provided with a pulley having extended journals, and vertical sliding seats operativelyconnected to said journals and arranged to move in opposite directions, in combination with a counterpoise-cable operative on a main pulley, an auxiliary cable operatively arranged on both pulleys, aspringbolt secured to the ends of this latter cable and connected with an indicator mechanism, in turn connected with the bolt, and transferable weights, substantially as and for the purpose set forth.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing I have hereunto set my hand, at Milwaukee, in the county of Milwaukee and State of \Viscousin, in the presence of two witnesses.
GEORGE B. BERGEN.
