IMPROVEMENT IN STEAM-PUMPS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 35,966, dated July 22, 186'?.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that` we, CALVIN WOODWAED and GEORG-E M. WooDWAEn,both of the city, county, and State of New York, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Steam-Pumps; and we do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact descript-ion of the-same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, forming part of this specification, in which- Figure l is a side view of a steam-pump with our improvement. Fig. 2 isa transverse vertical section of the same. Fig. 3 is a central longitudinal section of the same.

On one end of the crankshaft is the eccentric wrist I, which gives motion to a second vibrating link, J, by which the induction and eduction valve L of the steam-cylinder is operated, the lower end of the said link being arranged to oscillate upon the rock-shaft H, and the upper end being connected with the valve-stem i.
Steam admitted at one end of the'cyiinder B drives the piston B toward the other end,
andthe rod D moves the piston C and link G in the corresponding direction, and the link produces half a revolution of' the crank M, shaft F, and eccentric wrist I, and the said wrist brings the valve to a position to admit steam to the opposite end of the cylinder, when the motion of the piston B', rod D, piston O', and link G is reversed, and the revolution of the crank is completed, causing the wrist I to bring the valve to a position to admit steam again to the first-mentioned s ide of the piston; and in this way the operation 'is repeated, the link G having, besides its vibrating motion, a slight upward and downward movement, provided for by the slot e, equal to the versed sine of the arc that would be described by the centers of the boxes h h movement upward and downward in the slot The application of a crank audfly-wheel,
in combination with the direct connection of the pistons,renders the operation of the valve more certain than that produced by a tappet motion or any other valve motion actuated without a iiy-wheel, and the connection of the crank-shaft with the piston-rod, by means of the vibrating link and sliding box, permits its arrangement between the cylinders where it occupies no room in a direction lengthwise of the cylinders, but, on the contrary, permits the cylinders to be broughta little closer together than when a tappet motion is used to work the valve.

Combining a crank and fly-wheel with a diA rect-connectiou steam-pump by means of a vibrating link, G, and sliding box d, arranged and applied in connection with the piston-rod and between the steam and pump cylinders, substantially as herein specified.
