SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 359,529, dated March 15, 1887.

To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that we, Gnonen Asnwoncrii and ELIJAH ASHWORTH, residing at Manchester, county of Lancaster, England ,and sub jects of the Queen of Great Britain and Ireland, have invented certain Improvements in the Bends of Oarding-Engines, (for which we have obtained a patent in Great Britain, No. 2,432, dated May 15, 1883,) of which the following is a specification.
Our invention relates to the curved bend upon which the ends of the'fiats travel in their movement partly around the cylinder of the carding --engine. As ordinarily constructed these bends are made to be slightly flexible and are adjusted, approximately, by drawing in or pushing out the ends by means of screws, so as to obtain a curve of the required radius. This method doesnot furnish means for obtaining a surface which shall be truly concentric with the axis of the main cylinder. To obtain a truly concentric bend or rail we cast a curved rail in' one piece with the pedestal, in which is formed or fitted the bearing for the shaft of the main carding-cylinder, and we true the periphery of the rail to a segment of a true circle having the axis of the cylinderbearing for its center.

In the drawing a curved rail, a, is connected by cross-pieces b b with the pedestal c, in which are fitted the bearings (Z for the shaft of the main cylinder. The parts a l) c are cast together in one piece. The frame so formed is turned in a lathe, so as to obtain an outer surface at e e which shall be truly concentric with the axis of the bearing d. To effect this a mandrel may be fixed in the bearing, and the frame may be turned on the mandrel-centers, or the frame may be otherwise adjusted in the lathe. The frame is bolted to the top of the bottom engine-framing, f,and takes the place of the ordinary upper side frame. A similar frame or rail is secured on each side of the engine-framing.
When the maincarding-cylinder is placed in its working position, with its shaft mounted to revolve in the bearings d on each side of the engine, the periphery e of the rail a will be truly concentric with the axis of the cylinder, in consequence of the said periphery having been turned from the centers of the said 5 5 bearings. The bearings d are supported with the pedestal upon the upper end of a screwed pillar, g, which passes through a tapped hole in the bottom of the pedestal and is furnished with a lock-nut. NVhenever necessary, the main cylinder can be raised and lowered by. turning the said screwed pillar in order to make the axis of the cylinder to be concentric with the periphery at e. The ends of the flats travel upon the turned peripheries of the rails or frames a on each side of the engine, or upon metal ribbons, which we apply upon such peripheries in accordance with another invention for which we have made application for a patent, (said application filed October 29, 1883, Serial No. 110,306.) In some cases we may turn the rail or to a complete circle ex tending. below the framing f.
Our invention is applicable to various constructions of carding-machines in which trav- 7 eling flats are used, an example being that shown in our British Patent No. 2,916 of 1879.
We claim as our inventionl. The combination of the lower frame of a carding-engine with a curved rail, a, having a bearing-pedestal, c, in one piece with the rail, the periphery of the latter being concentric with the bearing for the. axis of the main cylinder, substantially as set forth.
2. The combination of the lower frame of a carding-engine with an upper side frame and a bearing-pedestal cast in one piece with the said upper side frame, the periphery of the latter being concentric with the bearing for the axis of the main cylinder, substantially as 0 described.
3. The combination of the lower frame of a carding-engine with an upper side frame, a pedestal, 0, cast in one piece with the latter, and a bearing and an adjusting'screw, 9, sub- 5 stantially as specified.
