ELEVATOR FOR STICKER RODS. No. 359,291. PatentedMar. 15, 1887.

sffidw, @WMW UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE. I
OOCHRAN G. STOVER, OF BRADFORD, PENNSYLVANIA.
ELEYATOR FOR SUCKER-RODS.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 359,291, dated March 15, 1887.
Application filed December 3, 1884. Renewed December-9, 1886. Serial No. 221,149. (No model.)-'
' to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
Figure 1 is a front view of my improvement; Fig. 2,a side view. Figs. 3, 4, 5, and 6 are detailed views of parts of the elevator.
The object of this invention is an improve: ment in sucker rod elevators in common use in the oil regions and at Artesian wells; and my improvement consists in the peculiar construction of the bail and its combination with the finger and swinging wrench, as hereinafter more particularly set forth and claimed.
The said bail is provided with the wrench E, which is slotted to receive the squared end of the sucker-rod joint. This wrench E is so mounted in the arms B B that the arms can be swung vertically or horizontally, and when the arms are in the latter position free access is afforded to the slot in the swinging wrench E; but when the arms stand vertically, as in Figs. 1 and2, the entrance to the slot in the swinging wrench E is closed by the finger O. This finger O is so bent and mounted that it has a tendency to crowd the sucker-rod into therecess when theshank is thrown up into its vertical position.-
The bail of the elevator, by which it is raised,
is composed of the arms B B, the shank A, and the swivel-loop F, to which it is connected by screw a. The shank A has two screw-threaded holes, a a drilled in itto receive the threaded end b of the arm B, and those arms are firmly screwed into the shank. The finger Chas two side grooves, 0', into which fit the arms B, and said finger O is firmly fastened between those arms by the iron ring D, which is heated and then driven down over the arms until they are forced into the grooves c in the finger O, and when cool its shrinking firmly binds the arms B B into the finger O. This heating of the ring D can be done by placing that part of the apparatus over which the ring is in the fire after the parts are placed in position.
I am aware that it is not new to provide a sucker-rod elevator with a pivoted wrench and a finger for closing the opening in said wrench, and I therefore do not claim the same. i What I claim as my invention is-- 1. In combination with the pivoted wrench E and the removable finger 0, having grooves c and c, the yoke having arms B, which fit into groove 0, and ring D, which fits into grooves c, substantially as set forth.
and the removable finger, the yoke having arms and the ring which slips over said arms and causes them to grasp the finger, substantially as set forth.
