UN TED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
JOSEPH DISMAN, OF DAYTON, OHIO.
MACHINE FOR FEEDING STRAW INTO ST EAM-BOILERS USED IN PAPER-MAKING.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 358,923, dated March 8 1887.
Application filed August 16, 1886.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, J osnrn DISMAN, a citizen of the United States, residing at Dayton, in the county of Montgomery and State of Ohio, have invented a certain new and useful Improvement in Machines for Feeding Straw into Steam-Boilers Used in Paper-Making; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and'exact description of the invention, which will enable others skilled in the art to reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to the letters of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification.
My invention relates to improvements in a machine for feeding straw into a steam-boiler used in paper-making; and it consists of an endless band supported on pulleys, saidband being connected by an arm to a plunger which carries the straw into the boiler by a recipro eating movement. My object is to provide a long sweep for the plunger, and have the power more effectively applied to said plunger than if a crank were used to carry said plunger an equal distance. I attain the object by the mechanism illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in which Figure I is a side elevation of the machine for feeding straw. Fig. II is a front elevation of the same.
Like letters designate like parts throughout the several views.
A is the frame which serves to support the operative parts, and may be variously modified. Oross'pieces in the frame support the shafts B and G. On the end of shaft B is attached the pulley E, with transverse grooves across its face, and a peripheral groove may be used on said pulley, with lugs of the links Serial No. 211,083. (No model.)
to occupy this space to prevent the endless band slipping from its place on said pulley. F is a pulley of identical construction with the former, and is attached to the end of shaft C. These two pulleys carry the endless band G, which is composed of a series of links jointed together. A curved lug on the under surface of said links enters transverse grooves of the pulleys to prevent slipping of the endless band.
The arm I is pivoted to the endless band and likewise to the plunger J. This plunger has longitudinal grooves on both sides, and within which tongues of the guides 0 enter to maintain said plunger in a vertical position, and within which the same may have a reciprocating movement given by the endless band through the arm. On shaft O is attached the driving-pulley D, to which the power is applied to operatethe machine.
The dotted lines at L show the position of a hopper, and the circular dotted line the steam-boiler, into which the straw is carried by the reciprocating movement of the plunger.
Having fully described my invention, what I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
In a machine for feeding straw to a steamboiler, shaft B, with pulley E, shaft O, with pulley F and driving-pulley D, and endless band G, carried by said pulleys, in combination with arm I and plunger J, substantially as set forth.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing as my own Iaffix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
JOSEPH DISMAN.
