Askin Attorney Sheldon F. Raizes ABSTRACT: A pole riser member encloses a cable on a utility pole and is provided with ventilation openings. A shield is placed directly behind the openings but spaced from the wall containing the openings to provide a passage for air and prevent any objects stuck through the openings from striking a cable.
1 POLE RISER MEMBER WITH VENTILATION SHIELD DESCRIPTION The primary object of this invention is to provide a pole riser member with ventilation openings while still preventing a cable which the pole riser member encloses from being struck by objects being stuck through the ventilation openings.
Other objects of the invention may be readily appreciated from the following wherein:
FIG. 1 is an elevational view of an installed pole riser system; and 7 FIG. 2 is a view taken along section line 2-2 of FIG. 1.
Referring to FIG. 1, a utility pole 10 extends out of a concrete base 12 and a cable jacket 14 is embedded in the concrete base. A cable 16 extends through the jacket 14 and projects out ofthe jacket 14 upwards along the pole.
A large polyvinyl chloride protector boot 18 is located at the lower portion of the pole with the lower end 19 thereof abutting the concrete base 12. The boot is approximately 1 /2 feet long and is of an oversized configuration at the bottom thereof to allow for bringing the cable from the jacket 14 up against the pole 10. The bottom portion of the boot i8 is generally U-shaped in cross section and the upper portion thereof is generally hat shaped in cross section and as shown in FIG. 2, comprises a central curved or crown portion 20 which merges with a pair of flanges 22 at each lateral side thereof. A pair of lag bolts 24 extend through a respective flange 22 to secure the boot to the pole. The free end of the U-shaped wall of the bottom portion of the boot engages the pole surface when the boot is secured to the pole. The boundaries of the crown portion 20 and the boundaries of the U-shaped section define a cable receiving. portion of the boot and as shown in FIG. 1 cover the bottom portion of the cable 16.
A polyvinyl chloride pole riser guard member 26 extends upwards for about 20 to feet from adjacent the upper end of the boot 18. The guard has the same general hat-shaped transverse cross section as the upper portion of the boot 18 and comprises a central curved or crown portion 28 which merges with a pair of flanges 30 at each lateral side of the crown. The flanges 30 are shaped to fit the contour of an ordinary utility pole 10. A plurality oflag bolts 32 extend through the flange 32 and secure the guard 26 to the pole 10. The crown portion 28 defines a cable receiving portion of the guard 26 and as shown in FIG. 1 covers the cable 16. A strap 34 is secured to the post I0 by lag bolts 36 and covers the space between the adjacent ends of the boot l8 and guard 26.
A plurality of ventilating holes 38 are provided in the crown portion 20 of the boot 18 to prevent heat buildup in the boot. The axis of each hole extends generally transverse to the longitudinal axis of the boot. A solid shield 40 is located directly behind the holes 38 and is secured to the inner surface of the crown portion 20 by any well-known means such as by heat sealing or an adhesive. A space 42 is provided between the shield and that portion of the wall containing the holes to provide an air passage from the holes into the interior of the boot. The shield is wide enough to prevent anyone from striking the cable by inserting any object through any of the holes 38 thus eliminating any change of accidental electrocution to a child or vandal and eliminating any chance of damaging the cable.
If desired, ventilation holes 44 may also be provided in the guard member 26 as shown in FIG. 1. The location of the shield 46 is the same as for the boot with a space being provided between the shield 46 and that portion of the wall containing the holes 44 to provide an air passage from the holes into the interior of the guard.
From the above, it can be seen that applicant has provided a construction which provides forventilation, and prevents the cable from being struck by an object inserted through the ventilation holes.
I claim:
1. In combination: A utility pole extending out of the ground, a cable extending along the pole, a pole riser member secured to said pole and covering said cable, said ole riser member comprising a cable receiving portion, at east one hole extending through the wall of said cable receiving portion and opening onto the face thereof, the axis of said hole being transverse to the longitudinal axis of said pole riser member, and solid shielding means located directly behind said opening and secured to the wall of said cable receiving portion and spaced from the wall of said cable receiving portion adjacent said opening to provide an air passage between the wall of said cable receiving portion and said shielding means, said solid shielding means being wide enough to extend beyond said hole a sufficient distance to prevent any objects stuck into said opening from striking said cable.
2. The combination as recited in claim 1, wherein said member is a boot, said boot comprising a generally U-shaped in cross section portion at one lateral end changing into a generally hat shaped in cross section portion at the other lateral end, said hat-shaped portion including flanges at each side engaging said pole and a crown portion located intermediate and merging into said flanges, means extending through said flanges securing said boot to said pole, the boundaries of the U-shaped portion and of the crown of the hatshaped portion defining said cable receiving portion of said boot.
3. The combination as recited in claim 2 wherein said at least one hole is provided in said crown portion.
4. The combination as recited in claim 1, wherein said member is generally hat shaped in cross section, said hatshaped portion including flanges at each side engaging said pole and a crown portion located intermediate and merging into said flanges, means extending through said flanges securing said boot to sad pole, said crown portion defining said cable receiving portion of said boot.
