Abstract

THIS INVENTION RELATES TO A WARNING DEVICE THAT IS ACTIVATED BY ROUGH HANDLING, IT IS PARTICULARLY ADAPTED TO DOLLS AND LIKE TOYS. THE MECHANISM COMPRISES AN ELECTRICAL SYSTEM HAVING AN IMPACT OPERATED SWITCH. THIS SWITCH COMPRISES SPACED. APART ELECTRICAL CONTACTS WHICH ARE MOMENTUM ACTUATED BY ROUGH HANDLING. THE SWITCH MAY BE A PAIR OF RIGID CONTACTS ONE OF WHICH IS SWINGABLE OR IT MAY BE A SWITCH OF GREATER SENSITIVITY WHEREIN ONE OF THE CONTACTS IS A SUITABLE METAL SPRING.

WARNING MECHANISM FOR GENTLE HANDLING OF DOLL It is an object of this invention to provide a doll which will cry when handled roughly.
It is a further object to provide an inexpensive mechanism for inducing the crying of said doll.
These and other objectives of this invention will become apparent upon reading the following descriptive disclosure of an illustrative embodiment in which:
FIG. 1 is a perspective view of one form of the impact operable switch,
FIG. 2 is a detail view showing the manner of obtaining electrical switch contact,
FIG. 3 is a plan view of the phonographic crying mechanism actuated by electrical switch contact,
FIG. 4 is a detail view taken on line 4-4 of FIG. 3 and showing the manner of stopping the phonograph record,
FIG. 5 is an electrical circuit diagram of the device,
FIG. 6 is a side view of a modified switch using substantially rigid coil means as one of the switch contacts and FIG. 7 is a schematic view of the manner of disposing the mechanism in the body of the doll,
Turning to the drawing, an equilateral triangular plastic electrically insulated box 10 having sidewalls ll, 12 and 13, and a top wall 14 is provided with a suitable identically tensioned coil spring 15 in each of its three corners. A metal rod 16 is molded or otherwise secured vertically and rigidly in the plastic top wall 14 in the center thereof. A wire 17 is secured to the rod metal switch contact 16.
Interiorly and substantially centrally disposed in the box 10, there is disposed a switch contact metal washer 20 having a suitable large central aperture 21.
The three coilsprings 15 are secured in respective holes disposed in said washer 20.
As shown in FIG. 1, the three springs 15 position the washer 20 centrally in box 10. The rod 16 is located within the large aperture 2l of washer 20in suitable spaced-apart relationship thereto and at a right angle thereto.
As shown in FIG. 2, when the doll is roughly handled as by spanking or dropping in any direction of 360 degrees, the mass or weight of the washer 20 causes momentum induced movement of the washer to effect an electrical momentary contact to the rigid rod 16, thereby causing current flow in wires 17 and 22 (FIG. 5).
I The space or distance between rod 16 and washer 20 is a measure of the intensity of rough handling necessary to make electrical contact and thus to start the crying mechanism to operate.
The crying time is predetermined by the record 30 and is stopped when the needle arm 31 after traveling to its limit 32 is returned by spring 33 with hammer like action to force a closing of the stop switch having fixed metal pillar 34 and a flexible metal pillar 35. After the closing of the stop switch, the needle arm 31 is disposed in its reset position and is ready for recycle operation of further handling.
As shown in FIG. 5, the electrical circuit comprises a conventional transistor unit 40, a suitable capacitor 41, a resistor 42 and a battery 43 and a motor 60.
FIG. 6 shows a modified mechanism whereina preferably plastic backplate 50 is secured to the interior wall of the doll in place of box 10. A plastic support plate 14X is disposed on said plate 50 at a right angle thereto. A suitably springy semirigid longitudinal coil 16X is secured by a pair of washers SI and 52 or by other conventional means to the depending vertically disposed rod 16X. An electrical wire 17 is secured to said rod 16X.
A right-angle metal shelf 53, having a suitably large aperture 54 therein, is secured by rivet 55 to backplate 50 so that rod 16X is centrally disposed in aperture 54. The semirigidity of coil 16X is such as to maintain a spaced relationship between said rod 16X and shelf 53 even when the doll is horizontally disposed. A wire 22 is secured to metal shelf 53, so that the operation of the mechanism of FIG. 6 is on the same scientific principle as that used for the mechanism of FIG. I.
I claim:
I. A device for inducing crying upon rough handling of a doll comprising a doll body; a plastic insulated three cornered box disposed in said body; a metal rod rigidly disposed in the box too wall; an apertured washer suspended in said box; a coil spring secured to each of the three comers of said box and to said washer, said metal rod being disposed in the aperture of said washer in spaced relationship to the washer wall and electrical warning photographic means electrically connected to said washer and said rod; said warning means including a needle am and needle; a fixed metal pillar electrically engaging said metal rod and a metal flexible pillar disposed electrically in said warning means whereby said needle arm movably engaging said flexible pillar effects electrical contact to said pillar to stop the warning phonographic means from operating after first being activated by said washer engaging said fixed rod in said box.
2. A crying mechanism for dolls comprising a sound record; a battery operated motor in driving connection with said record; a source of electric current in circuit with said motor; a phonographic mechanism having a needle arm and a needle spring loaded and mounted to a housing for following the sound grooves in the record; said housing having a stop switch comprising a fixed pillar electrically connected to an electrical switch and a flexible electrical pillar contact to engage said needle arm to permit impact contact of said flexible pillar to said fixed pillar to electrically stop operation of said record; said electrical switch comprising an impact washer switch having the washer therein suspended in an equilateral triangular plastic box; said washer switch having washer springs suspended in said equilateral triangular plastic box; said switch having an electrical rod rigidly fixed in the top and bottom walls of said box and disposed within the aperture of said washer in spaced relationship therewith; said rod being electrically connected to said fixed pillar whereby contact of said rod and washer starts the phonograph record and contact of said fixer pillar to said flexible pillar stops said record.
