SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 358,787, dated March 1, 1887.

T0 at whom it may concern.-
Be itknown that LJEREMIAH J. RAILSBAOK, a citizen of the United States, residing at Indianapolis, in the county of Marion and State of Indiana, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Belt-Replacers, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to an improved device for replacing belts upon pulleys.
The object of my improvement is to provide a simple and cheap device which may be applied to a belt and easily connected with a pulley while running at full speed, whereby the belt will be drawn upon the face of the pulley, all as hereinafter fully described.
The accompanyingdrawings illustrate my invention.
Figure 1 is a side elevation of my device. Fig. 2 is a perspective view showing the manner of replacing the belt on the pulley. Fig. 3 is an elevation showing the position of the replacer after the belt has assumed its proper position on the pulley.
A is the pulley, and B the belt.
My device is formed, preferably,of stout iron or steel wire bent at opposite ends toward the same side to form a loop, a, and a hook, b,connected by a straight portion, 0. The straight portion 0 is a little longer than the width of the belt on which the device is to be used. Loop a is of a length equal to about half the length of the straight portion c,and is adapted to be slipped loosely over one edge of the belt. Hook 1) is short, being adapted. to slip easily over and engage one edge of the rim of the pulley, projecting but slightly on the inner side.
The operation of my device is as follows: The pulley A revolving in the direction indicated by the arrow, that edge of the'belt faro thest from the pulley is inserted in the loop a, the end of the loop being on the side of the belt next the pulley. Hook b is then slipped over that edge of the pulley-rim farthest from the belt, as clearly shown in Fig. 2, the belt at the same time being slightly lifted. The hook at once catches on the edge of the pulley-rim and is carried forward thereby, thus drawing the belt over the pulley and into its proper posit-ion thereon. As the belt assumes its proper position laterally on the face of the pulley the hook bis carried out of engagement with the pulley, as shown in Fig. 3', and the whole device then slips easily from the belt after the pulley is passed.
By the use of this device heavy main belts may be put on driving'pulleys without stopping the engine or exposing the operator to injury.
I claim as my invention- 1. A new article of manufacture, consisting of the straight rod 0, having formed integral therewith the loop a,and the hook b,all formed as shown and described, and adapted to co-op- JEREMIAH J. RAILSBAOK.
