SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 358,740, dated Marcil 1, 1857.
Application filed June E15, 1886. Serial No. 206,954.
To LZZ whom, it may concern.-
Be itknown that we, J AMES Hirn HAnnis and WILLIAM POOL, citizens of the United States, residing at Pittsville, in the county of 5 Johnson and State of Missouri ,have in vented a new and useful Improvement in J um pAGates, of which the following is a specication.
Our invention relates to an improvement in jump-gates, and it consists in the peculiar construction and combination of devices, that will be more fullyset forth hereinafter, and particularly pointed ont in the claims.
In the drawings, Figure lis a side elevation of a gate embodying ouriinprovements. Fig. 2 is a top plan view of the same. Fig. 3 is a detail view showing the plate which carries the pulleys. Fig. 4 is a detached sectional view showing the pivoting of the rocking bars.
Arepresents the post against which the gate opens. B represents the post against which the gate closes, and C represents the pair of posts which are located midway between the posts A and B, and out of line with the said posts, thus leaving an uninterrupted way between the posts A and B.
D represents a transverse bolt orshaft, which extends through horizontal openings that are made in the posts C, near the lower ends there` of. To the said bolt or shaft is secured a pair o' rocking bars, E. The outer sides of the said bars bear against the opposing inner sides ot' the posts G. The upper ends ofthe barsE are connected together by a transverse plate, F'.
On the upper ends of the posts C is located a plate, F, which is provided with slots j' near its extremities. Between the slots f and directly in the center of the plate is a transverse slot or opening, j", in which is journaled apair of grooved pulleys, G.
II represents an arch or casting which is provided atits lower ends with feet h, that itin the openingsf, and in the said arch or casting is journaled a pair of pulleys, I, which are arranged at right angles to the pulleys G and above the latter. BlatesK bear upon the ends of the plate F and the feet 7i of the arch or casting, and bolts or screws L pass through the said plates K and F, thus securing the plates K to the plate F, and also securing the 5o said plate F to the upper ends of the posts C.
As the plates K bear upon the feet of the arch (No inodelfi or casting,it will bereadily understood that the said arch or casting is thereby firmly secured to the plate F. In the post A is a vertical slot, A', and in the lower ends of the said slot is journaled an antiAfriction roller, A2.
IVI represents the gate, which may be made in any preferred suitable manner, and composed of any suitable material. The central portion of this gate is pivoted between the centers of the rocking bars E by means of a pivotal transverse bolt, N, which passes throhgh the centers of the said gate and rocking bars. From the rear end ofthe gate projects :a rearward-extending arm, O, the length of which is a little in excess of the length of the gate, and the said arm passes through the slot A and bears upon the roller A2.
P represents a latch which is attached to the front end of the gate, and is provided with forwardly-extending arms, which bear against opposite sides of the post B, thereby preventing the gate from being moved laterally when the gate is closed.
R represents posts, one of which is located on each side of the gateway in line with the post C and at a suitable distance from the said posts. To the upper ends of the posts B are journaled pulleys S.
T represents a pair of ropes or cords,whicl1 have one end attached to the plate E. From the said plate the said cords or ropes extend between the pulleys G in the plate F, and pass under the said pulleys, through the center ot' the opening j", and from thence the said cords or ropes pass over the pulleys I, down through the inner ends of the openings f, and from thence outwardly over the pulleys S on the posts R. To the extreme outer end of the cords or ropes T are attached weights T, the function of which is to keep the said cords or ropes taut.
The operation of our invention is as follows: The gate is closed when in the position indicated in solid lines in Fig. 1. In order to open the gate, a person approaching it from. either side takes hold of one of the ropes or cords and pulls upon it, thereby raising the rocking bars E, and also raising the gate. Just before the bars E reach a vertical position, the person opening the gate jerks upon the rope, thus causing an additional impulse to be imparted.
ICO
to the rocking barsand the gate, thus preventingthe rocking bars from coming to a standstill when in a vertical position, and carrying them rearwardly over the center of their pivotal bolt or shaft D. The gravity of the gate and the rocking bars, .when the latter have passed rearwardly over the center of their pivotal bolt, as hereinbefore stated, causes the gate to be lowered against the post A, thus leaving the space between the posts G and the post B entirely unobstructed. Ihe function of the rearward-extending arm O of the gate, which passes through the slot in the post A, is to direct the gate and keep it in astraight line when being opened or closed. After the person has passed through the gateway he takes hold of the rope 'I on the opposite side and repeats the operation before described, thus causing the gate to close. A
A gate thus constructed is cheap and simple, is strong and durable, and may be operated in a snow-driftno matter how deep, thus preventing the gate from being blockaded by the snow and rendered inoperative.
Having thus described our invention, we claiml. The combination ofthejulnp-gate and the rocking arms to which the gate is pivoted with the'vertical posts C, the plate F, connect- `ing the upper ends of the said posts and having the opening f', and the pulleys G, journaled in the said opening, and the arch or casting H, secured to the plate F above the latter and carrying the pulleys I, and the cords or ropes attached to the rocking bars and passed between the pulleys G and over the pulleys I, substantially as described.
2. The combination of the post A, having the slot A', the post B, against which the gate closes, the posts C, located between the posts A and B, the plate F on the upper ends of the posts C, having the openings f and the central opening, f', the pulleys G, journaled in the opening f the arch or casting H, having the feet h, adapted to fit in the openingsf, the pulleys I, journaled to the said arch or casting, the plates K, secured on the ends of the plate F and bearing on the feet h, the rocking bars E, `journaled between the lower ends of the posts C, the gate pivoted between the said bars and having the rearward-extending arm passed through the slot in the post A, and the cords or ropes attached to the rocking bars and passed between the pulleys G and over the pulleys I, substantial] y as described.
In testimony that we claim the foregoing as our own we have hereto aiiiXed our signatures in presence of two witnesses.
JAMES HIIE HARRIS. TILLIAM POOL.
