GEORGE F. SIMONDS, OF FITCHBURG, MASSACHUSETTS.
ROLLED CONICAL PROJECTILE.
SPECIFICATION forming part. of Letters Patent No. 358,627, dated March 1, 1887.
Application filed November 2-2, IP84. Serial No. 148,587.
To aZZ whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, GEORGE F. SIMONDS, of Fitchburg, in the county of Vorcester and State of Massachusetts, have invented an Improved Article of Manufacture in a Rolled Conical Projectile for Gunnery and other Purposes; aud I hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the same, reference being bad to the accompanying drawing, making part of this specification, in which the figure shows a side elevation of a conical rolled shot or projectile.
My invention relates to projectiles for 0rd nance and other guns, great and small; and it consists in a rolled conical projectile as new article of manufacture.
In order that those skilled in the art may make and use my invention, Iwill proceed to describe the manner in which I have carried it out.
In the said drawing, A is a side elevation of a rolled conical projectile produced and completed by rolling alone and without the aid of lathes, hammers, or other tools or me chanical appliances.
In rolling the conical projectile which I have invented Iprefer to use the mechanism (No model.)
described and shown in my application, Serial N 0. 125,633, filed March 26, 1884, and platens having die-faces constructed in the manner shown and described in my application for a patent filed of even date herewith, whereby the projectiles are made from theingot, blank, or bar by the rolling operation of oppositelymoving platens provided with said die-faces. Other means than those recited, however, may be employed,if found available, and new mechanisms or methods may be devised for rolling the rolled conical shot or projectile without departing from the spirit of my invention, the principal and essential feature of which is the new article of manutacturem wit, a rolled conical projectile.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
*Asolid pointed projectile rolled to form and the metal condensed and hardened all at one operation, substantially as described.
GEO. F. SIMONDS.
