PATENTEU JUN] 51971 3584' 675 sum 1 BF 2 PATENTEU JUN] 5 I971 SHEET 2 BF 2 MULTICOLORED FRAME FOR FOLDING FURNITURE This invention relates to a frame for folding furniture. More particularly, this invention relates to a decorative frame for use as a back rest or seat for a foldable chair or chaise.
I-Ieretofore various folding furniture constructions have been known wherein tubing material has been utilized for supporting an occupant. In many cases, in order to impart a decorative appearance to these frames, the tubing material has been made of different colors. For example, in some instances, the tubular frames have been constructed with tubes of different colors which are wound in alternation with each other so as to present a varied pattern of colors.
However, in order to construct the heretofore used frames, such has required many steps in order to position the various colored tubes onto the frame. In addition, such has required a relatively great period of time in order to properly place the tubing materials in their respective positions in order to effect the pattern of color desired.
Accordingly, it is an object of the invention to provide a frame having a multicolor pattern thereon which is constructed in a simple manner.
It is another object of the invention to provide a frame for a foldable frame which has an attractive appearance.
It is another object of the invention to provide a multicolor frame for a foldable chair which 'iseasy to manufacture within a relatively short time.
Briefly, the invention provides a frame for foldable furniture such as chairs and chaises for outdoor use which has a multicolored appearance. The frame is constructed with a rigid frame, for example, of tubular U-shaped construction, and a tubing which is wound about the frame in a series of windings to form a surface for supporting an occupant. The tubing is constructed as a single integral piece as an extrusion having a tube section and a cord section integrally formed together. In addition, the tube section is formed of a larger cross section than the cord section and is also formed with a surface of a different color from the surface of the cord section.
In order to assemble the frame, the tubing of the multisection is secured at one end to the rigid U-shapcd frame and wound around the frame in a series of windings. Thereafter, the remaining end of the tubing is also secured to the frame.
These and other objects and advantages of the invention will become more apparent from the following detailed description and appended claims taken in conjunction with the accompanying drawings in which:
FIG. I illustrates a perspective front view of a foldable chair incorporating frame of the invention therein as a seat and a back rest;
FIG. 2 illustrates a rear perspective vie of the chair of FIG. 1;
FIG. 3 illustrates a view taken on line 3-3 of FIG. 1;
FIG. 4 illustrates a view taken on line 4-4 of FIG. 1;
FIG. 5 illustrates a view of a frame of the invention during assembly;
FIG. 6 illustrates a schematic view of the manner of making an extruded tube for the frame of the invention; and
FIG. 7 illustrates a view taken on line 7-7 of FIG. 6 illustrating a cross-sectional view of the extrusion.
Referring to FIGS. 1 and 2, the chair I0 is constructed with a leg support assembly II of conventional structure as well as an arm assembly 12, likewise of conventional structure. In addition, the chair It) has a seat 13 and a backrest 14, each of which is secured to the leg support assembly I1 and arm assembly 12 for folding therewith between a collapsed and an open position. Each of the seat 13 and back rest 14 are constructed in identical fashion and therefore only the back rest will be further described hereinafter.
Referring to FIGS. 1, 3 and 4, the back rest I4 is constructed of a frame which includes a U-shaped frame 15, for example, of tubular aluminum construction, and an extrusion 16 which is wound about the U-shpaed frame in a series of windings I7. The extrusion I6 is formed with a hollow tube section I8 and a hollow cord section 19. The tube section 18 and cord section 19 are disposed along side each other in integral relationship. In addition, the cord section 19 is formed with smaller cross-sectional dimensions than the tube section 18, that is, for example, the cord section is of smaller diameter than the tube section 18.
The extrusion I6 is secured to the U-shaped tubular frame 15 by suitable securing means 20, for example, a series of threaded screws. These threaded screws 20 pass through the ends of the extrusion 16 as well as through intermediate sections of the extrusion 16 into threaded engagement with the U-shaped frame 15. These threaded screws 20 can further be provided with suitable washers or heads 21 so as to provide an increased area of contact with the material of the extrusion 16 in order to prevent a tearing away of the extrusion material from the threaded screws 20. As shown, the ends of the extrusion 16 are secured to the inside of the U-shaped frame 15 whereas the intermediate sections of the tubing are secured to the rear of the U-shaped frame I5.
Referring to FIGS. 1 and 7, the extrusion 16 is formed of a plastic material, such as vinyl, which has a uniform color. In addition, the cord section 19 is provided with a coating 22 of a second color which is distinct from the color of the extrusion 16. This coating 22 is applied to the entire exposed surface of the cord section 19 so that the extrusion is provided with a two-tone color effect.
Referring to FIGS. 6 and 7, in order to form the extrusion 16 with the coating 22 on the cord section 19, a mass of the plastic material of the extrusion is fed through a suitable extrusion die 23 (FIG. 6) which forms the extrudable material into the shape desired. For example, the extrusion 16 is formed into a tube section 18 of circular cross section and a cord section 19 also of circular cross section with both sections 18, 19 integrally attached along a longitudinal surface. At this point, the extrusion would be of a uniform color throughout. Thereafter, the extrusion 16 passes through a coating assembly 24 of conventional structure within the extrusion machine (not shown) and the coating 22 of color is coated about the cord section 19.
Referring to FIG. 5, in order to assembly the backrest frame, the extrusion 16 is secured at one end by a threaded screw 2%) to the top portion of the U-shaped frame 15 and thereafter is wound about the U-shaped frame I5 until reaching the bottom portion thereof. At this point, the extrusion 16 is severed and secured at the severed end as by another screw to the U-shaped frame 15. Alternatively, the extrusion can be initially sized to the correct length before winding onto the U-shaped frame 15. Further, as another alternative, the extrusion 16 can be wound for a partial length along the U-shaped frame with a second length of extrusion 16 being wound about the remainder of the U-shaped frame. Depending upon the overall length of the extrusion 16, one or more threaded screws 20 can be secured along intermediate sections of the extrusion to further maintain the windings of the extrusion in proper position on the U-shaped frame 15.
The invention thus provides a frame for foldable furniture with a support surface which has a two-tone effect and which is constructed in a relatively simple manner. The support surface of the frame is formed of an extrusion of multisectional construction wherein one section is formed of one color and a second section is coated with a second color. For example, the larger section can be made of a turquoise color while the smaller cord section is coated with a dark blue color. Further, while the respective sections of the extrusion can be provided with different colors, the sections can also be provided with different shades or tones of the same color such as light olive section and a dark olive section.
The invention further provides a frame which can be easily assembled with a two-tone appearance. That is, since the extrusion is integrally formed with a tube section and a cord section of different colors, it is only necessary to wind the extrusion about the tubular U-shaped frame in a single step operation. Furthermore. because of this single step operation, the
relative position of the tube section to the cord section remains fixed at all times so that no separation between the various sections occurs which would otherwise disrupt the aesthetic appearance of the chair in which the frame is incorporated. Further, by forming the extrusion of two sections of 5 a rigid frame, and
a plastic tubing extrusion secured to and wound around'said frame to form a support surface, said extrusion having a hollow tube section and a hollow cord section integrally formed together, said tube section havinga surface of a different color from the surface of said cord section and being of larger cross section than said cord section, and
said cord section has a coating thereon of a different color from the color of said tube section.
2. A frame assembly as set forth in claim 1 wherein said rigid frame is U-shaped and of hollow construction, and the windings of said tubing are secured at spaced points to said rigid frame.
3. A frame assembly as set forth in claim 1 wherein said plastic material is opaque.
