HARNESS'PAD.
No. 357,981. Patented Feb. 15, 1 887.
N. PETERS, Hwiolilhognphcr. WuhIW D-C.
UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
EDWARD T. COVELL, OF NEW BEDFORD, MASSACHUSETTS, ASSIGNOR OF ONE-HALF TO CHARLES F. CUSHING, OF SAME PLACE.
HARNESS-PAD.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 357,981, dated February 15, 1887.
Application filed June .26. 1886. Serial No. 206,297.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, EDWARD T. CovELL, a citizen of the United States, residing at New Bedford, in the county of Bristol and State of Massachusetts, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Harness-Pads; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the same, ref erence being had to the annexed drawings, making a part of this specification, and to the letters and figures of reference marked thereon.
Figure 1 of the drawings is a top plan view of my improved harnesspad; Fig. 2, a longitudinal section thereof, and Fig. 3 an under side plan view of the pad.
The present invention has relation to the construction of pads for harness, and the object thereof is to provide a pad which will be both light and durable and will not chafe or gall the animal, and in many respects superior to the pads in ordinary use, which objects I attain by the construction substantially as shown in the drawings, and hereinafter described and claimed.
In the accompanying drawings, a represents a covering of leather for the lining b of the (N0 model.)
for such class of pads, is especially adapted for the purpose, it having many advantages not found in other metals.
The leather covering a and sheet-metal lining b are firmly secured together by a binding, 0, preferably of leather, said binding overlapping the edges of the covering and lining and secured thereto by stitching or in any wellknown manner, and the upper side of the pad is provided with a suitable fastening device, (I, for attaching it to some part of the harness, whereby thepad is held in position onthe animal. A harness-pad is thereby provided complete in itself that is both durable and effective and comparatively light, while it can be manufactured and placed in the market at a greatly-reduced cost.
Having now fully described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
A harness-pad consisting of a lining of white metal having a polished surface, a leather covering therefor, and a binding secured around the edges of the lining and covering to hold them together, said pad having a suitable fastening device for securing it in position on the animal, substantially as and for the purpose set forth.
In testimony that I claim the above I have hereunto subscribed my name in the presence of two witnesses.
