ATTACHMENT FOR COOKlNG-VESSELS.

SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 357,111, dated February 1, 1887.

Be it known that I, RALPH A. WILLISON, of Hartwell, in the county of Hamilton and State of Ohio, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Attachments for Cooking- Vessels, which improvement is fully set forth in the following specification and accompanying drawings, in which Figure 1 is a vertical central section of a cookingwessel with my improved attachment; Fig. 2, a perspective view of the frame-work of the attachment; Fig. 3, a side view of the wire crate detached, and Figs. 4 and 5 modifications of the-device.

This invention is an improvement in crates for culinary vessels, such as kettles, stewingpans, &c., consisting of a woven-"wire basket to the rim of which a bail is fastened, having reenforcing ribs outwardly, and the articles to be cooked being placed within this removable crate, the whole can be placed within the cooking-vessel and readily removed therefrom afterward, all of which will now be fully set forth in detail.

In the accompanying drawings, A represents an ordinary cooking vessel or kettle. I provide a metallic frame, consisting of a rim, 0, having flange B, so as to form a support for the device when placed in a kettle, .and also provided with a suitable bail, D. Attached to this rim 0, I provide opposite re-enforcingribs, E, formed of large wire, which extend downwardly a short .distance and connect at the bottom with a small hoop, F. The ends of the bail D are hooked or engaged in the eyes 0 at the upper ends of two of the ribs E, which at opposite sides extend beyond the rim 0. The contour of this frame is such that it will readily rest .within an ordinary kettle, as shown in Fig. 1. The bottom of the frame is sufficiently flat, so that when the frame is removed from the kettle it may be set on the table and not tip over. Within this framework I place a woven-wire crate or basket, G, which is designed to be of such a size as to be readily placed therein and removed for cleaning purposes, if desired; or, if preferable, the upper part, H, of this crate may be woven directly to the band 0 of the frame-work, in which case, as will be noticed, it will not be detachable. This frame, with the crate G therein, is placed within the kettle A, with the flange or bead Bof the frame resting upon the rim of the said kettle. For ordinary purposes I use a crate that is as deep as the ordinary kettle, as will be'noticed in Fig. 1; but I oocasionally-find it convenient to provide a crate (shown in Figs. 4 and 5) wherein I form the reenforcing ribs with a square bottom, J, so that it only partially fills the kettle, and thus, answers all the purposes of a steamer.

, As will be noticed, this device may be used for a great variety of purposes. In cooking different classes of articles it is frequently difficult to remove them from the cooking-utensil without burning the person using the device, and at the same time it is the cause of much annoyance in breaking up the articles so removed; but with this device the entire material may be instantly and conveniently removed from the kettle by raising the crate therefrom.

I am aware of Patent No. 164,436, for floursifter, and No. 17 5,07 2, for coffee-pot strainer, and do not claim the structure or combination of parts found in either of them.

\Vhat I claim as new is An attachment for a cooking-vessel, consisting of a metallic frame having at its upper part a flanged rim, whereby it is supported in the vessel, and wires connecting with said rim and descending to form the bottom, a bail attached to the upper ends of said wires, and a removable wire crate or basket fitting within said frame, substantially as described.
