Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 35,696, dated June 24, 1862.

To all whom it TIMI/Z]. concern Be it known that Lflmmnn L of Detroit, in the county of Wayne .-in the State of Michigan, have invented a new and Improved Mode of Constructing and Arranging Foot Lights on the Stages of Theaters and other Buildings of Like Nature; and I do here hy declare that the following is a full andcxact description thereof, reference being bad to the accompanying drawing, and to the letters of reference marked thereon.

The nature of my invention consists inplac ing the lights.A in a trough sunk in the trout of the stage below the ordinary floor-level, as

shown, and employinga continuousreflector,

B, to reflect the light at such an angle and direction as may bedesired, the back of the reflector forming a screen-from the audience; the arrangement admitting also of the reflecting onto the stage lights of any color by the substitution or insertion from below, or other- 1'. The position and'inode of arrangement of the lights with the continuous reflector, as distinguishedfrorn the mode now ordinarily in use;

2. The power of throwing colored lights on the stage, as above described. 1

3. By means of the guard formed by the sunken trough and the wire-cloth covering,

greatly increased safety to performers. Y
