Description
UNITED NSTATES,
PATENT OFFICE.
NORMAN B. CLABAUGH, OF FREDERICK CITY', MARYLAND.
IMPROVED WASHING-MACHINE.
T0 all whom, it vil/Ly concern.'
Be it known that l, NORMAN B. GLABAUGH, of Frederick City, in the county of Frederick and State of Maryland, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Vashing Machines; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full and exact description thereof, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, forming a part of my specification, and to the letters ot' reference marked thereon, like letters indicating the same parts in the figures, and in which drawings- Figure l'is a longitudinal vertical section of my improved washing-machine; Fig. 2, a like view of the pressureboard, and Fig. 3 an enlarged cross-section o f the rubbing-ribs of the pressure-board.
In the drawings, A indicates a wash-tub of any convenient dimensions having an opening or angular slot, ct, as shown partly in dotted lines in Fig. l, cut in its sides to receive the axis or gudgcon, e, of a rubbing-cylinder, B, the bearings ot` the gudgeon ot' said cylinder resting in the bottom ot' said opening and being ysecured in place by a pin, a', as indicated in said tigures. The ends of said cylinder are at their peripheries cut in the form of arcs of circles, which are eccentric to the axis c ofthe cylinder B, as at ci, and upon which rubbing boards C are secured, as
shown, the forward working portion of each rubbing-board being nearer to the center of the axis e than its rear working portion. The Working-faces of the rubbingboards C are corrugated in the form of ribs d the entire length of the cylinder B, the form and diameter of said ribs being the same in the entire series of said boards surrounding theheads or ends of the cylinder.
Cleats t" are secured at one end of the machine, as indicated in dotted lines in Fig. l, in which to receive the bearings i2 of a crossbar,` i, which supports a circular formed weighted rubbing-board, H, having a working-face composed of a series of rubbing-plates, H', cach of which plates is formed with aseries oi' ribs, h', h2, h3, and It, of increasing height from rib h to rib ht, as shown. This rubbingboard H is in width the sanne as the length of the cylinder B, and is made to articulate freely upon its bearings t2, and thus be brought up toward the cylinder B with a greater or less pressure, according as a greater or less leverage is exerted upon it by means of a weight, L, placed upon an arm, k, attached to its cross-bar t3, the pressure of said rubbilig-board being governed by the position the Weight L may occupy in either of the notches It', k2, or 7a of the arm 7c, as the case may be.
Clothes being placed in the machine between the rubbing-board H and the cylinder B, and the cylinder rotated by the crank f, it will be perceived that the clothes will be subjected to a Wedging pressure over each one of the rubbing-boards H, and that as the clothes leave one board and pass onto the adjoining one a relaxation of the pressure takes place upon the clothes, thus allowinOp the clothes to take in a supply of suds for ,a renewed pressure which had been expelled by their previous passage over one of the boards H.
It is obvious that for light7 or heavy clothes the operator will govern the amount of pressure by applying more or less weight to the arm k.
Thus constructed my machine possesses all the requisite capabilities for washing delicate or heavy articles, is simple in its mechanism, not liable to get out of order, and effective in action.
Having thus described my invent ion, what l claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent ofthe United States, is
1. A rubbing-cylinder, B, armed with ec' i centric rubbers C, in the manner and for the purpose set forth.
2. A rubbing-board, H, having its rubbingplates H formed with a series of ribs h', 7i?, 7L, and h", of increasingheight, in the manner and for the purpose specilied.
A rubbing-cylinder, B, in combination with a rubbing-board, H, substantiallyin the manner and for the purpose set forth.
N. CLABAUGH.
