Abstract

Comblike guide means for jet looms comprising a plurality of flat guide blades juxtaposed with respect to each other. Each guide blade has at least two contiguous openings of substantially circular shape disposed normal to the broad extend of the blade. Each blade has an exit slit for each one of the two openings. Each flat guide blade comprises conically shaped guide means for guiding the weft thread toward the shed formed by the jet loom. The juxtaposed flat guide blades are arranged in such a way with respect to each other that the openings thereof are aligned with respect to each other and form two longitudinally extending tapered passages for conducting jet air streams provided by jet air producing means respectively mounted at opposite sides of the jet loom.

These known looms are provided with nozzles through which the air jet exits and by its blowing action causes the weft threads to move through the warp thread shed in the weft insertion direction. The comblike guide means of these known arrangements are composed of a plurality of guide blades, each of which is provided with one opening which is closed substantially along its entire periphery with the exception of a narrow weft thread exit slit. The plurality of the guide blades are juxtaposed so that their openings are aligned with respect to each other and form a passage, thereby preventing the wefl threadfrom coming into contact with the warp threads forming the shedQafter it has been inserted. This known arrangement has an important drawback in that the weft thread can only be inserted in one direction. Due to this drawback, the known air jet looms require complicated mechanisms or additional material for making even the simplest selvedge.
SUMMARY OF THE INVENTION It is a primary objectof this invention .to provide an air jet loom in which the aforementioned drawback is eliminated.
The arrangement of the invention comprises a comblike guide means which are formed by a plurality of flat guide blades. Each one of the guide blades is provided with two openings, each of which has a substantially smooth peripheral surface and a narrow weft exit slit. The interior surfaces of the openings of the flat guide blades are formed by conically shaped guide surfaces which are tapered in the direction in which the weft thread is to be inserted. The guide blades are mounted in juxtaposed relationship to each other so that the openings of each guide blade are aligned with respect to each other and form two oppositely tapered passages for directing the movement of the weft threads in opposite weft insertion directions.
The aforedescribed arrangement of this invention provides the very important advantage of guiding the weft thread in opposite directions so that it can be inserted from both sides of the loom. Such an arrangement is very important in the weaving technology because of the versatility of its operation. For example, a natural selvedge can be formed in the woven fabric with the arrangement of the instant invention by using onlythe basic weaving material and not any additional threads and without employing any additional mechanisms. By using alternate feed directions for the weft thread insertions the loom revolutions may be increased and the breakages of weft threads are simultaneously reduced. An additional advantage resides in the possibility of using a double quantity of weft thread material while employing the same supply packages.
BRIEF DESCRIPTION OF THE DRAWING The drawing illustrates diagrammatically two embodiments of the arrangement of the invention:

DESCRIPTION OF PREFERRED EMBODIMENTS Referring now to the drawing, it can be noted that the arrangement of this invention forms part of an air jet operated loom which comprises the usual rack shaft 1 which is actuated by a known (but not illustrated) mechanism. The shaft 1 is pivotally connected to a connecting rod 4 by means of a projecting lock 3 which is, on the one hand, secured to the shaft 1 and, on the other hand, pivotally connected to the rod 4 by means of a pin 2. The connecting rod 4 is, at its other end, pivotally connected to the swords 6 of the loom by means of the pin 5. The swords 6, in turn, are pivotally mounted in the loom by means of the pin 7. A lay or batten 9 is secured to the swords 6 by means of a pair of bolts 8. As can be noted particularly in FIG. 3 the lay 9 has a groove 10 which is adapted to receive a bar-14. The bar 14 is adapted to engage a reed 12 and maintain the latter in an operative position. The lay 9 is provided with a projection having a threaded opening 91; adapted to receive a threaded bolt 13 which bears against the bar 14 and urges the latter toward the projection9c of the lay 9, thereby maintaining the reed 12 in the operative position. The comblike guide means 11 of the arrangement of this invention, as illustrated in the embodiment of FIG. 3, comprise a plurality of juxtaposed flat guide blades 15. Each guide blade 15 has a foot 16 which extends into a mating opening in the bar 14 and is secured therein by a suitable adhesive. As can be noted from FIG. 2, the individual guide blades 15 are separated from each other by spaces 17 so that the whole forms a comblike arrangement. The sides of each guide blade 15 are preferably flat and form an edge 18 at the upper end. Each guide blade 15 is provided with two substantially circular openings 20, 21. The opening 20 is provided with a narrow exit slit 22 and the opening 21 is provided with a narrow exit slit 23. The exit slits 22 and 23 permit the weft threads respectively extending through the openings 20 and 21 to respectively exit via the slits 22 and 23 during an operation explained hereinafter. A shed 19 is formed bythe rows of warp threads 27 which have the usual apex formation at the fell. The support arrangement comprising the swords 6 and the connecting rods 4 cause the comblike guide means 11 to reciprocally move in the shed 19 and to beat the weft threads (not shown) against the fell on the fabric 28 in a manner explained hereinafter.
FIGS. 1, 2 and 3 illustrate a first embodiment of the comblike guide means 11. In this first embodiment the guide means 11 comprise a plurality of juxtaposed flat guide blades 15, each of which is provided with a pair of openings 20, 21, disposed one above the other in a plane which is substantially parallel to the reed 12 and some ofwhich at least are aligned with the latter in the warp direction. As can be noted from FIG. 3, the exit slits 22 and 23 of the openings 20 and 21 are disposed so that the exit slit 22 communicates the opening 20 with the exterior of the comblike guide means 11 whereas the exit slit 23 communicates the opening 21 with the opening 20.
FIGS. 4 and 5 illustrate a second embodiment of the com blike guide means 11. In the second embodiment the guide blades 15a have a different shape and configuration than the guide blades 15 of the first embodiment. Each guide blade comprises a pair of openings 20a and 21a which are disposed side by side in a plane substantially perpendicular to the reed 12. The openings 20a, 21a, are respectively provided with exit slits 22a, 23a which lead into a common exit passage 26, through which the weft thread which has been either inserted into the opening 20a or the opening 210 may exit from the comblike guide means 11.
The other members of the air jet loom which are illustrated in FIG. 4 correspond to the members also illustrated in FIG. 3 and therefore bear the same reference characters.
In both of the exemplary embodiments all of the respective peripheral interior surfaces 24, 24a, 25 and 25a of the openings 20, 20a, 21, 21a of the guide blades 15 and 15a of the comblike guide means 11 are tapered so that the interior surface of each opening has the configuration of a truncated cone. All of the openings 20, 20a and 21, 21a are aligned with respect to each other and are substantially equal in size. The guide blades 15, 150 are sufficiently closely spaced together so that the openings 20, 20a and 21, 21a respectively form tapered passages favoring the flow of the air jet stream in opposite directions (see FIG. 2). Thus the weft threads (not shown) can be easily inserted and moved in opposite weft directions through the aforedescribed passages by the air jet streams produced by blowing devices (not shown) mounted at opposite sides of the loom.
The arrangement of this invention operates as follows:
When the lay 9 during its reciprocal movement occupies its rear position (see FIG. 1) a known blowing device (not illustrated) blows the weft thread into the warp thread shed 19 by directing an air jet stream in the general direction of the shed via a suitable nozzle (not illustrated). The nozzle operates so as to blow a jet stream of air normal to the broad extent of the guide blades and through the passage formed by the openings 20, 20a of the guide blades 15, 15a. The jet stream of air is guided and regulated by the peripheries 24, 24a of the openings 20, 20a which are tapered and shaped to aid the movement of the weft thread in the weft direction. The guide blades 15, 15a of the comblike guide means 11 are positioned in the warp thread shed 19 at the moment the weft thread is inserted. When the lay 9 is moved forwardly towards the apex of the shed 19, the passage formed by the openings 20, 20a of the guide blades 15, 15a of the comblike guide means 11 moves forward and downwardly so as to emerge from the shed l9. Simultaneously therewith the shed 19 is being closed by the usual loom warp mechanism (not shown). Due to the aforedescribed movements the weft thread comes in contact with the warp threads forming the shed 19. After a further movement of the lay 9 the weft thread is urged by the warp threads 27 to move through the exit slit 22, respectively 220 and 26. Thereafter, the reed 12 beats up the weft thread against the fell of the fabric 28. Thereafter, during the return movement of the lay 9 the guide blades 15, 15a reenter the shed 19. After the lay 9 has returned to its rear position (see FIG. 1) a second known blowing device (also not illustrated) directs an air jet stream via a nozzle (also not illustrated) in the opposite weft direction normal to the broad extent of the guide blades and through the passage formed by the openings 21, 21a of the guide blades 15, 150. This second air jet stream moves a weft thread through the passage formed by the openings 21, 21a. The peripheral surfaces 25, 25a of the openings 21, 21a are tapered and shaped so as to aid the movement of the weft thread in the aforedescribed other weft direction. Thereafter the lay 9 is again moved forwardto its front position, that is, towards the apex of the shed 19. The guide blades 15, 15a of the comblike guide means 11 then again are moved downwardly due to the downward movement of the lay 9 and therefore emerge from the shed 19 which undergoes simultaneously a closing movement. Due to the aforedescribed movements, the other weft thread, extending through the passage formed by the openings 21, 21a of the guide blades 15, 15a, comes in contact with the warp threads 27 forming the shed 19.
Referring now to the embodiment illustrated in FIG. 3, the weft thread is urged to exit from the passage formed by the openings 21 via the exit slits 23 and thereafter the exit slits 22. Thus, the weft thread first moves from the passage formed by the openings 21 to the passage formed by the openings 20 via the exit slits 23 and thereafter leaves the comblike guide means 11 via the exit slits 22.
Referring now to the embodiment illustrated in FIG. 4, the other weft thread extends first through the passage formed by the openings 21a in the guide blades 15a. The warp threads 27 urge, due to the downward movement of the lay 9, the weft thread to move through the exit slits 23a as they come into contact with the weft thread. Thereafter the weft thread exits from the guide blades 15a via the exit slits 26. Thereafter, the reed 12 beats up the weft thread against the fell of the fabric 28. Thereafter, the lay 9 returns to the position illustrated in H6. 1 and thus the guide blades 15a reenter the shed 19. Thereafter, the aforedescribed cycles are repeated.
The aforedescribed two embodiments of the comblike guide means 11 of this invention have been illustrated and described by way of example and the invention is not intended to be limited to the constructions and configurations of the two embodiments. Numerous modifications of the constructions can be made and are intended to be included in the scope of protection afforded by the appended claims.
We claim:
1. in a jet loom which introduces weft threads into successive sheds formed in the warp, said loom having air jet blowing means mounted at respective opposite sides of said loom for blowing the weft threads into the sheds by means of a fluid under pressure and having a lay reciprocally movably mounted in said jet loom on which reed means are secured, the improvement comprising comblike guide means mounted on said lay comprising a plurality of juxtaposed guide blades each of said plurality guide blades having respectively at least two openings, each opening being provided with an exit slit and having a substantially circular configuration, the peripheral interior surfaces of each opening being shaped so as to substantially fonn a truncated cone which is tapered in the direction in which the weft thread is adapted to be inserted, said plurality of guide blades being mounted in said loom so that a preselected opening in each guide blade is aligned with corresponding preselected openings of the other guide blades of said plurality of guide blades, thereby said openings in said guide blades respectively forming at least two passages which are respectively tapered in opposite weft insertion directions.
2. In a jet loom, the comblike guide means as set forth in claim 1 in which said two openings in each guide blade are disposed one above the other and are in communication with each other via one exit slit, each one of said plurality of guide blades being positioned in a plane which is substantially parallel with said reed means of said jet loom.
3. In a jet loom, comblike guide means as set forth in claim 1, in which said two openings are disposed side by side with respect to each other so that a line passing through the centers of said openings is substantially perpendicular to a plane passing through the axes of said reed means of said jet loom.
4. In a jet loom as set forth in claim 3, including an additional exit slit which is in communication with the exterior of each guide blade, on the one hand, and with the respective exit slits of said two openings, on the other hand.

Claims (4)

1. In a jet loom which introduces weft threads into successive sheds formed in the warp, said loom having air jet blowing means mounted at respective opposite sides of said loom for blowing the weft threads into the sheds by means of a fluid under pressure and having a lay reciprocally movably mounted in said jet loom on which reed means are secured, the improvement comprising comblike guide means mounted on said lay comprising a plurality of juxtaposed guide blades each of said plurality guide blades having respectively at least two openings, each opening being provided with an exit slit and having a substantially circular configuration, the peripheral interior surfaces of each opening being shaped so as to substantially form a truncated cone which is tapered in the direction in which the weft thread is adapted to be inserted, said plurality of guide blades being mounted in said loom so that a preselected opening in each guide blade is aligned with corresponding preselected openings of the other guide blades of said plurality of guide blades, thereby said openings in said guide blades respectively forming at least two passages which are respectively tapered in opposite weft insertion directions.
2. In a jet loom, the comblike guide means as set forth in claim 1 in which said two openings in each guide blade are disposed one above the other and are in communication with each other via one exit slit, each one of said plurality of guide blades being positioned in a plane which is substantially parallel with said reed means of said jet loom.
3. In a jet loom, comblike guide means as set forth in claim 1, in which said two oPenings are disposed side by side with respect to each other so that a line passing through the centers of said openings is substantially perpendicular to a plane passing through the axes of said reed means of said jet loom.
4. In a jet loom as set forth in claim 3, including an additional exit slit which is in communication with the exterior of each guide blade, on the one hand, and with the respective exit slits of said two openings, on the other hand.
