Description
UNITED f STATES wrriLiAM- D; ANDREWS `To allgwhom itmy concern: t'
l Be it known that LWILLrnM D. ANDRnws, `of the city, county,.a`n`d State of New York, have inventeda newand] useful Improvement in Reciprocating Pumps; and I do herebyr de` l clare thatthe following isa full, clear, and exactdescriptionofthesame, referencebeng had to theaccompanyingdrawings, making a part of this specilication,in}which A Figure 11 isalongitudinal central section of .my`inventiou, taken inlthe line a: `:v,`Fig.2;I1"ig. ;2,a transverse s on'of the same, taken inl the line y y, Fig.` A A Y Similarmletters of reference indicate corre` sponding partsfinthetwo gures. This `invention, consists in .the employment of acompoundqpiston{orone provided with `twovalvesty opening "in opposite directions in "right line and `usedlin connection with a `ater-tightpartitionor abutment placed with 4,inthe pump-cyli erfand in such relation with thetworpiston-valves, the eduction or A. discharge opening, and avwater-passage communicating with Lthepumpcylinder, that by' a simple reciprocating movement ofthe piston each valve" `will `alternately propel the stream inj the 1same direction throughI the pump andeach valvednring its reverse move- A ment allow the stream to pass freelythrough it, therebvvoperatingwitli a moderate eXpenditure of power, r admitting ot'` a; rapid` movementwith butlittle wearand tear of the working parts, and raisingand forcing a large` volume ofwaterin-agiven-time; l To enable `those skilled in theartto fully "understand and construct myinvention, I will proceedtodescribeit. g
mpf cylinder having l A represents 3g/the pu `gwithinit a` water-tight partition or abutment,
`Brand Gis the piston-rod the piston of which isjformed'of twoparts, D, D', each of which isfprovided with avalve, E, -thevalves open- ',abutmentBJvhich is between them, as shown "clearly in FigiV `1. "lhe piston-rod C works `through the abutment B, and ball-valves are represented in the drawings; but other forms may beused.
v F is a water-passage whichis parallel with the cylinder Aand communicates with it at V opposite sides of the abutment B, and G is an "ing in oppositedirections or both toward the` y PATENT OFFICE.

:Thefoperation isf as follows: When a reciprocating movement is given the piston-rod C,
direction indicated by the arrow l, will be drawn through the induction-opening H Aas the valve of the part D of the piston closes and the suction end of the cylinder Alls through the passage Fand into the pump-cylinder at the opposite side of the abutment, and thence through the part D of the valve and ont through the eduction-openiug G. 2.) During the opposite movement of the piston-rod C, as indicated by arrow 3, the valve of the part D of the piston opens and the valve of the part D closes, and the part D draws the water through the part D and passage, F, and at the same time forces the water in front of it out through the eduction- .opening G. rlhus it-will be seen that the two `parts Vof the piston a'ct alternately, and a conpurpose herein set forth.
