AUTOMATIC CAR-BRAKE.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 354,915, dated December 28, 1886.
Application filed April 16, 1886.
To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, KARL H. H. LEINE- WEBER, a subject of the Emperor of Germany, residing at Chicago, in the county of Cook and State of Illinois, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Automatic Car- Brakes, of which the following is a specification, reference being had therein to the accompanying drawings.
This invention relates to automatic. brakes for railway-trains of the class operated by the draw-bars in a manner that as long as there is no pulling or pushing force applied the brakes will be tightened upon the Wheels, but that with applying a force upon the draw-bars in either direction the wheels will be released, whereby the locomotive-driver will" have the train under full control; and the invention more particularly'relates to improvements on the devices described in Letters Patent of the United States N 0. 308,617, issued to me on December 2,1884, Nos. 317,553 and 317,554, issued to me on May 12, 1885, and on No. 340,587, to be issued to me on April 27, 1886.

In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 represents a bottom view, and Fig. 2 a sectional elevation, of one end of a car having my improvements, with'the parts in positionwhen the draw-bar is neither pushed nor pulled, and the brake-shoes are tightened upon the wheels.- Fig. 3 is a bottom view of the same, showing the parts in the position when a pulling force is applied to the draw-bar. The same reference-characters in the several figures of the drawings designate like parts.
A denotes the draw-bar, which may be of any usual construction, and is guided between beams a and a of the car-body in the usual manner. The rear round-iron extension 1 of this draw-bar is passed through plates 3 and 5, guided in grooves between beams a a,

. and held betweenshoulders' therein that will allow such plates only to move toward each other, and upon the rear extremity of extension 1 is secured a collar, 2, between which and plate 3 is sleeved upon such extension a spiral spring, 4. The opening in plate5 is sufliciently large for the spring 4 to pass through it, and a heavy spiral spring, 6, is sleeved over spring 4, between plates3 and 5.
A similar arrangement as the above has been shown and described in my Letters Patent N 0. 317,554, the object being that the light spring 4 shall return to and hold the draw-bar in its normal position, and that with applying a pulling force the light resistance of the small spring will permit the draw-head to be moved a sufficient distance for the operation of the brakes before the heavy spring is broughtinto action.

D the brake-shoes, connected each pair by a beam, E, and suspended to the car-body by links 7. Against the rear brake-beam, E, is pivotally connected the brake-lever 8, one end of which, by a rod, 9, connects with the front brake-beam, and its opposite end, by a rod, 10, is connected with one end of a lever, 11, pivoted to fulcrum-brackets 12, that are rigidly secured under beams a a. The opposite end of lever 11 is connected by a chain, 13, with the hand-brake spindle14, that is operated by a hand-wheel, 15, but is to be used only in case ,of the automatic parts being-out of order.
To a bracket, 16, secured to and projected sidewise from under beam at, is pivoted a camplate, 17, having a curved side flange, and provided with end plates that are bored for forming the guide-loops for the shank of a bifurcated bar, 18, the prongs of which are curved and are passed over lever l1,with a'roller, 19, pivoted between such prongs and bearing against the rear edge of lever 11. The forward end of the shank of bar 18 is screw-threaded cured with its opposite end under beam ct, and is coupled at an intermediate point to draw-bar A by a link, 25.
As long as the drawbar A occupies its normal or idle position the roller 24 of bar 23 will bear against the most protruding pointof the curved flange of cam-plate 17, thereby pushing such cam-plate to a longitudinally'straight position that will shift the roller 19 to near the end of lever 11, whereby such lever is swung in the direction to tighten the brake-shoes u pon the wheels,and whilein that position the spring 22 will provide the required tensional forcefor the frictional contact of the'brake-shoes.
Wit-h applying a pulling force to draw-bar A the lever 23 will be swung forward, and with applying a pushing force to draw-bar A the lever 23 will be swung rearward, and in either case the roller 24 will be off the curved portion of cam-bar 17, that, thus released, will swing toward the fulcrum of lever 11, thereby allowing such lever to swing in the direction for releasing the brakes.
What I claim is 1. The combination, with draw-bar A and and spring 22, and lever 11, suitably connected for operating the brake-shoes, substantially in the manner set forth.
3. The combination, with draw-bar A, connected withlever 23, having roller 24, of pivotal cam-plate 17, with bar 18, spring 22, and roller 19, and lever 11, connected with lever 8, for operating the brake-shoes, substantially in the manner set forth.
4. The combination, with draw-bar A, provided with light and heavy springs and con nected with lever 23, having roller 24, of pivotal cam-plate 17 with bar 18, spring 22, and roller 19, and lever 11, connected with lever 8, for operating the brake-shoes, substantially in the manner set forth. V
5. The combination, with draw-bar A, connected with lever 23, of pivotal cam-plate 17 with'bar 18, spring 22, and roller 19, and vibratable lever 11, connected at one end by chain 13 with the hand -brake spindle and at its opposite end to lever 8, for operating the brake'shoes, substantially in the manner set forth.
