SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 354,764, dated December 21, 1886.

To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, CATHARINE E. BELL, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of West Point, in the county of Clay and State of Mississippi, haveinvented certain new and useful Improvements in Heaters for Beds; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact, description of the invention, which will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, which form a part of this specification, and in which- Figure 1 is a longitudinal vertical sectional view of my improved bed-warmer. Fig. 2 is a cross-section of the same. Fig. 3 is a perspective view of the heater with its outer covering removed, and Fig. 4 is a perspective detail view of the end of the heater having the door.

My invention has relation to heaters for beds or for similar purposes; and it consists in the improved construction and combination of parts of a heater, which may be placedin a bed or in the bottom of a vehicle for the purpose of heating, and in which an air-chamber surrounds the compartment containing the heating medium, as hereinafter more fully described and claimed.

In the accompanying drawings, the letterA indicates an outer cylindrical casing, which is preferably made of Russian sheet-iron and formed with end pieces, B and 0, having anumber of perforations, D, through which air may enter and pass out of the interior of the casing.

A tubular inner casing, E, is secured centrally within the outer casing, and this tube is preferably of copper or brass and provided with comparatively thick walls. One end of this tube is closed .by'the end piece B of the outercasing, and the other end projects through The end piece- 0 is provided with ears F F, into which the ends of a bail, G, are hinged, and a door, H, which may cover the open end of the inner tube, is provided with a laterallyprojecting lip, I, which is pivoted upon a pin, J, projecting from the end-piece at the side of the aperture in the same. The other edge of the door is formed with a wedge-shaped tapering hook-shaped lip, K, which may engage a flat staple, L, upon the end piece of the casing, and the door is furthermore provided with a handle or knob, M, at its free edge.

It will be seen that when the central bar or core is heated and placed within the tubular chamber, which is thereupon closed so that it cannot drop out of the same, the heat will communicate itself through the sides of the tube to the air within the cylindrical casing, which air will circulate through the perforations at the ends of the. casing and heat the surrounding objects by being heated within the casing.

The blankets, whichare wrapped around the cylindrical casing, prevent the heat from radiating from the casing, and at the same time cover the casing, so that it will not burn a person if he should comein contact with the heater.

, The tapering wedge-shaped and hook-shaped lip, which projects from the'door and engages the bail upon the end piece of the casing, will, by being forced into the bail, wedge itself fast within the same, so that the door will not be opened by handling and moving the heater and allow the hot bar to drop out and cause damage.

. Having thus described my invention, I claim and desire to secure by Letters Patent of the United States In a bed-heater, the combination of an inner and an outer casing secured at one end to a common bottom and an annular top secured to the other end, said top and bottom each being provided with a series of. perforations, a staple, a door pivotally secured to the top, having a wedge-shaped lip on one side, a handle or bail, and aheating medium withinsaid inner casing.
