UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE;
ROBERT L. STUFFT, OF SCOTTDALE, PENNSYLVANIA.
COMBINED DUST-RING AND CASE-SPRING FOR WATCHES.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 354,666, dated December 21, 1886.
Application filed July 13,1856.
To aZZ whom it may concern.-
Be it known that 1, ROBERT L. STUFFT, of Scottdale, in the county of W'estmoreland and State of Pennsylvania, have invented a new and Improved Combined Dust-Guard and Spring for atch-Cases, of which the following is a specification, reference being had to the anneXed drawings, forming a part thereof, in which- Figure 1 is a transverse section taken on line a: 00 in Fig. 2. Fig. 2 is a diametrical section taken on line 1 y in Fig. I. Fig. 3 is a detail view of one of the sections of the dust-guard, and Fig. at is a view of another section.
Similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts in the different figures of the drawings.
The object of my invention is to provide for watch-cases a dust-guard which may be readily applied and removed, and which will support the lifting-spring and catch-spring; also to provide a lifting-spring and catch-spring adapted to be used in connection with the dustguard.
My invention consists in the combination of two curved strips of metal having their ends turned outward and fitted to the interior of the case-body, and in two intermediate strips fitted bet-ween the ends of the side strips and completing the dust-guard, also in the combination, with the dust-guard thus formed, of case-springs fitted between the outwardlyturned ends of the side pieces and supported thereby.
The strips A, forming the side pieces of the dust-guard,are of suificicnt width to fit into the icentral portion or band of the watch-ease, and
the ends a of the strips are bent outward and fitted into the space in the central part of the watch-case body.
Between the outwardly-bent ends of the strips A are fitted curved strips B, which complete the dust-guard by forming a complete metallic circle around the movement. The chambers thus formed are arranged in diametrically-opposite edges of the watchcase, one being opposite the pendant, the other being opposite the case-hinge. In the chamber 0pposite the pendant is fitted a fiat spring, 0, having ends 5 turned backward and resting against the backwardlyturned ends a of the curved strips A. Upon the middle of the spring G is formed a catch, 0, which is held in Serial No. 207,897. (No model.)
position to engage the rim of the case-cover. The spring 0 is acted on by the push-pin d in the usual way. In the chamber in the opposite side of the case is placed a flat spring, D, provided with a curved arm, 6, extending up ward and engaging the shoulder of the casecoverf in the usual way. The ends 9 of the spring D are bent backward and rest against the outwardly-turned ends of the strips A.
My improved case-springs are light, easily applied, and readily replaced in case of breakage, it being only necessary the curved strips B to reach the broken spring and replace it with a new one.
My invention provides a means for strengthenin g and protecting watch-cases that is not so attached to the springs that in case of breakage of a spring the protection is made useless on account of it being a fixed part thereof.
\Vith my improvements the dust guard forms a protection to the case, which is a permanent part thereof.
In case of breakage of springs, spring will need to be replaced.
The sections of dust-guard, being closely fitted and pressed into place between the flanges of the center ring of the case, afford a strong protection and add to the stiffness and strength of that part of the case.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is c 1. A dust guard formed of curved strips A, having ends a bent outwardly. and interme diate curved strips, B, fitted between the sh onlders of the strips A, substantially as shown and described. I
2. The combination, with the curved strips A, having outwardlybent ends (I, of case-springs O D, formed of fiat strips of spring material, curved at their ends and abutting against the bent ends of the strips A, substantially as shown and described.
only the having outwardly-bent ends, intermediate curved strips, B, and the case-springs O. D, formed of fiat strips of spring material and fitted between the outwardly-bent ends of the strips A, substantially as shown and described.
