UNITED STATES PATENT @EEi'cE.
DANIEL E. PARIS, QF TROY, NEW YORK.
DRAFT-DOOR AND CHECK-DRAFT.
EJPE CIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 353,964, dated December 7, 1886.
(No model.)
To aZZ whom, it may concern:
Be it known that I, DANIEL E. PARIS, a citizen of the United States, residing at Troy, Ren-selaer county, New York, have invented new and useful Improvements in Draft-Doors and Check-Drafts, of which the following is a specification.
It is the purpose of my invention to provide a draft-door for stoves, whereby the draft may be perfectly and easily regulated by an adj ustment of the simplest character, the device be ing applicable to stoves of all classes.
To this end myiuvention consistsin the combination of devices, hereinafter described and claimed.
Referring to the drawings, Figure l is a perspective view showing a portion of the front of the stove in which my invention is embodied. Fig. 2 is a horizontal section showing the slide-plate and draft-door, together with a portion of the stove-wall, the actuating-slide being shown in dotted lines.
in the said drawings, the referencenumeral 1 denotes the wall of the stove, which may be of. any suitable style of construction. I have shown in the drawings a surface burning stove; but it should be understood that this invention is equally applicable to any other class of stoves in which heat is generated by the consumption of any kind of fuel.
At a suitable point within the wall of the stove is formed adraft-opening,2,and upon the stove-wall in front ofsaid opening is hinged or pivoted a draft-door, 3, by which said opening may be closed to exclude the admission of air. If desired, thisdraft-door may be illuminated by the insertion of mica plates 4.
Upon the wall ofthe stove, beneath the draftdoor 3,is formed or attached a slide-supporting plate, 5, which, as shown in the drawings, lies substantially in a horizontal plane, its surface being at a right angle with the wall ofthe stove, although such an arrangement is not essential, as the surface of said plate may be inclined at any suitable angle with the stove-wall.
\Vithin the sl1de plate 5 are formed parallel slots 6, which are cut diagonally relatively to said plate, forming an acute angle with the wall of the stove upon which the slide-plate 5 is mounted. These slots receive guide pins or studs 7. which depend from an actuating-Slide, 8, mounted and moving upon the plate 5. A
12, for the check-draft.
handle, 9, is formed upon slide 8, by which it may conveniently be operated, and it will readily be seen by moving it longitudinally upon the slotted support 5 it may be caused to approach and rccede from the stove-wall by reason ofthe diagonal arrangement of the slots 6, which receive the guidingstnds 7.
Upon or near the central portion of the draftdoor 3 is formed or attached an arm, 10, which is bent outward and then downward from its point ofattach mcntand enters aslot, 11, formed in the horizontally-movablc slide 8, the inner and outer walls of said slot acting as a cam on the arm by'reason of the slide moving both horizontally and laterally to and from the front plate of the stove. I therefore term the slota cam? The arrangement of these parts is such that when the actuating slide 8 is pushed to the ends of the slots 6, which are most remote from the wall of the stove, the draft-door will be thrown into close engagement with the opening 2, closing it against the admission of air, whereas by moving the actuating-slide in the opposite direction the door is thrown open. By varying the longitudinal adjustment ofsaid slide the draft-opening may be increased or diminished to any desired degree.
Above the draitdoor 3 is formed an opening, This aperture may be wholly or partially closed by a sliding door, 13, which may, if desired, be arranged in the strip 14 and be proiided with mica panes, as is the said strip for illuminating purposes.
The check-draft is so placed that the air adadmitted through it will pass above the burning fuel, thereby lessening the force of the current entering at the draft-opening and passing upward through the grate. By a very simple adjustment of the one relatively to the other the fire may be controlled with perfect ease, and may be brought to and retained at the exact point required.
The draft-door 4 is illuminated by mica, whereby increased radiation and greater light are obtained, and the beautyofthc stove is enhanced.
\Vhat I claim is- 1. The combination of a stove havinga draftopeningahingeddoor,aslidc-supportingplate, and a horizontally-movable slide supported and guided by the plate, and having a cam connected with the door, substantiall y as described.
2. The combination, with a stove having a draft-opening, of a hinged door, a stationary diagonally-grooved slide-supporting plate rigidly connected with the stove, and a horizon tally-movable slide having projections engaging the grooved part of the plate and loosely connected with the door, substantially as described.
3. The combination, with a stove having a draft-opening, of a hinged door, a stationary slidesupporting plate having diagonal guides, and a horizontally-movable slide engaging and guided by the guides of the plate and loosely connected with the door, substantially as described.
4. The combination ofa stove having a draftopening, a diagonally-slotted slide-supporting plate. a hinged door having an attached projecting arm, and a horizontally-movable slide having projections engaging the slotted part 20 of the plate and loosely engaging the arm of the door for locking the same at any angle of inclination, substantially as described.
5. The combination, with a stove provided with a draft opening, of a hinged draft-door 25. having an attached rojecting arm, a'diagonally-slotted slide-supporting plate, and a slide having aslot engaging said arni, and provided With studs or pins engaging the slots in the supporting plate, substantially as de- 0 scribed.
In testimony whereof I aifix my signature 1n presence of two witnesses.
