Description

UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
FRANCIS A. SALISBURY, OF GREENE, NEV YORK.
IMPRovl-:D KNIFE-CLEANING Box.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 35,328, dated May 2 0, 1862.
To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, FEANcIs A. SALISBUEY, of Greene, in the county of Chenango and State of New York, have invented a new and useful household article, which lcall a Compound Polishingdox and Rubber for Cleaning and Scouring Table-Cutleryg7 and I do hereby declare that the following is a full and exact description of the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, making a part of this specification, in which- Figure l represents a top view of the box, the sliding lid withdrawn, showing the internal arrangement. Fig. '2 shows the rubber k and polish-box, the same being moved to project overv the rubber, (shown in blue lines.) Fig. 3 is the rubber and polish-box, the lid being removed to show the interior and perforated bottom.
My invention relates to a new article of manufacture for household purposes; and it consists in a sliding box having a perforated bottom through which the polishing-powder is sifted, the same being secured over the rubber in such a` manner as to be moved on either side to emit the powder and hold it from discharging when the box is in its place, the rubber to be kept and used in a box where the cutlery is placed, so that half a I dozen knives or forks can be scoured at the thereon.
I make a neat substantial box, A A, of sufficient length and width to place half a dozen knives or forks side by side, with recesses in the bottom to receive the handles a a a, the blades b b b restingon the flat surface.
The
cutlery is held by a box, B, resting on the handles, the box being a place to keep a piece of chamois or flannel for wiping the dust off after scouring. The rubber C is made of a block of wood. The under side may be cushioned, so as to be quite elastic, vif desired, and covered with leather, felt, or cloth. On each end of the block are cleats c c, secured by two screws, t' 'i' t c', the cleats forming guides and clamps to hold, the polish-box D to the rubber, and will allow it to move either side, so as to project over the edge of the rubber C, by which means the perforated bottom d can be graduated, so as to discharge more orv-less of the polishing-powder, or shut it all off at pleasure. The small rubber E is made curved on the bottom to clean forks, and may fit in and be kept in the polish-box D when not in use. The polish-box is closed by a sliding lid, F,
vand is a convenient handle to the rubber C.
At the rear end of the box A is a long faint concave, G, into which the polishing-powder will accumulate as it is being used. The rubbers, the polishing-powder, and the cleaningcloths, are all contained in the boxes B and D, and are all kept securely and ready for immediate use in the box A A, which is closed by the sliding lid H. Thus it will be seen that a neat and useful article can be fur-` nished, and one of the di rtiest operations of the kitchen be avoided.
Having thus described my invention, what l claim as a new article of-manufacture, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
The polishing-box D, having a wire-gauze or a perforated bottom, in combination with the rubber C, the whole being arranged, op-
erated, and incased in the box A, substantially in the manner herein described, and for the purposes specified.
