SPECIFICATION forming part Of Letters Patent'No. 352,485, dated November 9, 1886.
Application filed August 4, 1886. Serial No. 210,007. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, ORLANDO T. OWINGS, of Le Mars, in'the county of Plymouth and the State of Iowa, have invented a new and Improved S parlcArrester, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description.
The object of my invention is to provide a new and improved spark-arrester, which is simple and durable in construction, and effect ively prevents the sparks from passing out of the smoke-stack.
The invention consists of various parts and details and combinations of the same, as will be fully described hereinafter, and then pointed out in the claims.
Reference is to be had to the accompanying drawings, forming a part of this specification, in which similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts in all the figures.
Figure l is a side elevation of my improve- Fig. 2 is a longitudinal central section of the same, and Fig. 3 is a plan view of the lower deflector.
To the upper end of the smokestack A are secured the braces B, which support the deflector 0, consisting of a plate, D, having a central aperture, E, and provided with an outer downwardly-extending flange or rim, F, and with an inner downwardly extending flange, G, to which the upper ends of the braces B are secured. The aperture E can be closed by a lid or cover, H, placed ontop of the plate D, and secured to a rod, I, extend ing downward and to the outside of the smokestack, and provided on its lower end with a handle, I, connected by suitable means with the cab of the locomotive.
, The upper end of the smoke-stack A projects into the cap J, which is formed by two cones, K and L, hinged together at their bases, the lower cone, K, being rigidly attached to the smoke stack A. The upper cone, L, is provided with a baseplate, M, having a central aperture, N, above which is placed a deflector, 0, supported by the braces P, attached to the base-plate M. The deflector O has an outer downwardly-extending rim or flange, Q.
WVhen the locomotive is running, the lid H closes the aperture E in the-defiector O, and the smoke, cinders, &c., passing into the smokestack A, strike against the lid H and against the plate D, and are deflected downward and then lodge in the space K, formed between the extending end of the smoke-stack A and the lower cone, K. The smoke passes around the deflector D, and up through the aperture N, and into the upper cone, L, and through its upper opening out into the air. Lighter particles, which are carried by the smoke around the deflector G, strike against the base-plate M, or against the deflector O, and fall down upon the plate D or the lid H.
When the fire is started, the lid or cover H is s wung sidewise, as shown in dotted lines in.
Fig. 3, so as to open the aperture E, whereby a strong draft is established in the smoke-stack A. The draft can be increased by swinging the upper cone, L, upward on its hinges by any suitable means connected with the cab of the locomotive and with the said cone L. The smoke then passes out into the air between the base-plate M and the upper edge of the lower cone, K.
Having thus fully described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent 1. In a spark-arrester, the combination of a cap and a smoke-stack projecting into the said cap with a deflector supported from the upper end of the said smoke-stack, and having a central aperture, and a lid or cover adapted to open and close said aperture in the deflector, substantially asshown and described.
2. In a spark-arrester, the smoke-stack A, the deflector 0, having the aperture E, and the lid H, adapted to open or close the said aperture E, in combination with the cap J, formed of the two cones K and L, hinged together at their bases, and the deflector O, supportedin the upper cone, L, above the aperture.N in the base-plate M, substantially as shown and described.
