\ SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 352,406, dated November 9, 1886.

To all whom it may concern.-

Be it known that 1, WILLIAM G. GHoLsoN,'

a citizen of the United States, residing at Cincinnati, in the county of Hamilton and State of Ohio, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Wire-Fence Binders;

and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as willenable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the My invention relates to wire-fence binders used to tighten the wires and regulate their tension, whereby all sagging, cracking, and bending of the wires isprevented; and it consists of a binder in three partsviz., a drum on which the Wire is wound, a journal-box for receiving the drum, and a key which fits in grooves in the journatbox to hold the drum in placeall arranged and operated to tighten the wires of a fence, as hereinafter described.

My improvement is illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in which Figure 1 is a face View of a post with my improved binder in position and the wire secured thereto; Fig. 2, a section on line 00 w of Fig. 1; Figs. 3, 4, and 5, detail views of the separate parts of the invention.

In the drawings, A. represents a drum, which is a rounded shank squared at one end to receive a wrench, and provided between its ends with square projections or blocks 1).

O is ajournal-box provided with sockets d, to receivethe round ends of the shank, a slot, 6, through which the wire is passed, and grooves ff on both sides of the slot,to receive the key G. The key G is slotted, forming arms h with inclined faces, and at its front end, on the under surface, provided with lugs i, that are adapted to hold the key in the groovesff of the journal-box. The drum is provided with a hole, j, between the blocks 12, through which the fence-wire is inserted.

The binder is attached to the post by means of screws or nails passed through holes l l in the journal-box. The drum is held in the journal-box by the tension of the wire.

In operation the wire is passed through the post, through the slot in thejournal-box, and through the hole in the drum. The drum is then turned by a wrench and the Wire thereby tightened. When the desired tension is obtained,the slotted key is slid under the square projections and into its place in the journalbox, whereby the binder is securely locked in place and all slipping prevented.

When the drum is in place, before the key is applied, the square corners b are held above the bottom of the journal-box far enough to prevent their touching thejournal-box. When turned in winding the wire, the square edges strike the bottom of the box, which serves as a fulcrum, adding power to the leverage. The drum can be locked by the key at every quarterrevolution.

This binder is as applicable in the stretching of telegraph-Wires as it is for the stretching of fencewires.

Having thus described my invention, what I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is

1. In a wire-stretcher, the combination,

with the journal-box having openended bearingsockets, of the winding-drum mounted in said bearing-sockets and provided with blocks ofgreater diameter than its body and so formed as to bear against the wall of thejournatbox when the drum is rotated, substantially as and for the purposes set forth.

2. In a wirestretcher, the drum A, pro- .vided with the square central projectionsb,

the journal-box 0, provided with slot e and the groovesf. and the key G, having a projection adapted to fit into the said grooves of the box, whereby the drum when the wire is tightened is locked and held in place, substan' tially as described.

3. A wiret'euce binder comprising, in combination, a winding-drum.
