P. A. POTTER.
SAW FILING IMPLEMENT. No. 352,352. Patented Nov. 9, 1886.
mmmm
% 7 WITNESSES I l 1 I r fliiorney be wider than the body of the saw; and my UNITED STATES FFICEQ PATENT SAW-FILING IMPLEMENT.
SPECIFICATION forming part. of Letters Patent No. 352,352, dated November 9, 1886.
Application filed July 29, 1886.
To all whomit may concern:
Be it k nown that I, PELEG A. POTTER, a citizen of the United States of America, residing at \Vellsborough, in the county of Tioga and State of Pennsylvania, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Saw-Filing Implements; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, referencebeing had to the accompanying drawings, and to letters or figures of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification.
My invention relates to certain new .and useful improvements insaw-fili ng implements, the objectof the same being to provide a device whereby the saw-teeth can be filed on their sides, so that the points of the teeth will invention consists in the construction and combination of the parts, as will be hereinafter fully set forth, and specifically pointed out in the claims.
In the accompanying drawings, which illus. trate my invention, Figure 1 is a perspective view of my improved rotary saw-filing implement, and Fig. 2 is a longitudinal sectional view.
A refers to the base or main frame, which is provided at suitable points with perforations, through which pass set-screws a (1, upon the ends of which the saw to be filed will rest, thus providing a support for the saw-blade. The opposite end of the base A is provided with an upwardly-projecting block, B, which is recessed longitudinally for the reception of the slotted end of a gage, 0. Through the slot in this gage passes a thumb-screw, D, which enters the block 13, so as to hold the gage in position. The end of the guide above the file is provided with a segmental head, 0, with suitable notches, d, in which the point of the teeth of the saw will bear.
The base A is provided with an opening, e, through which passes the shaft E, to the upper end of which is secured a disk, E, the opposite end of the shaft having attached thereto a crank-handle, F, for rotating the disk E, to
Serial No. 209,411. (No model.)
A which the circular file is attached. The circular file G is rigidly, though removably, secured to the disk E by any suitable means, and the sides of said file converge from their outer edges inwardly, so that said file will be tapered in cross-section. Ihe object of beveling the file on both sides is that, should one side wear out, the gage Ocan be removed and the file reversed.
When it is desired to file the teeth of a saw so that said teeth will be -broader at their points than at the portions where they join the body of the saw, the saw, whether circular or straight, is placed upon the ends of the set-screws a, and one of the teeth is placed in the proper recess in the gage. The crankhandle is then turned, so as to rotate the file. By making the gage adjustable the width of the portion of the teeth to be filed can be varied.
The device hereinbefore described is cheap, effective, and simple in construction, and may be employed for filing the teeth of saws either when said saw is attached to or removed from its spindle.
I claim- 1. In a saw-filing implement,.for the purpose set forth, the combination of the bed-- plate, a file pivotally secured above the same, means for rotating said file, and a gage extending over the same and provided with a series of notches, substantially as shown, and for the purpose set forth.
2. In a saw-filing implement, the bed-plate provided with adj usting-screws a a, a rotary filewith an inwardly-inclined face, and a gageplate adjustably attached to the bed-plate above the file, substantially as shown, and for the purpose set forth.
3. In a saw-filing implement, for the purpose set forth, a bedplate, A, provided with adjusting-screws a, upon which the saw to be filed may be placed, an adjustable gage-plate, G, with notches d, a circular file, G, with beveled edges, a shaft having a disk towhich said file is attached, and a crank-handle for rotating the same, the parts being combined and organized substantially as shown, and for the purpose set forth.
4. In a saw'filingimplement, a base or bed substantially as shown, and for the purpose 1:) plate, A, provided with adjusting-screws a, set forth. an adjustable gage, O, which lies over the file In testimony whereof I affix my signature in and is provided with a series of notches, d, in presence of two witnesses. 5 combination with the circular file G, having inwardly-beveled cutting-face, said file being PELEG POTTER removably secured to a rotary disk, E, so Witnesses: that it may be reversed thereon, and means WALTER SHERWOOD, for rotating the shaft which carries said disk, 7 ALONZO L. BOWEN.
